Prices of Dysprosium and Terbium – December 11, 2023

On December 11, 2023, Chinese domestic rare earth market showed mixed trends in the prices of light and heavy rare earths. The prices of praseodymium and neodymium continued to decline, while the prices of dysprosium and terbium remained temporarily stable.

In the light rare earth market, besides the weak demand from magnet material enterprises, the gradual improvement of the rare earth resource recycling and utilization system, and a shortage of liquid funds are major reasons contributing to the difficulty for current suppliers to stabilize prices. However, under these circumstances, some rare earth manufacturers have reduced production. According to information from China Tungsten Online, the production of praseodymium and neodymium oxide in Guangxi and Jiangxi decreased significantly in November. In the medium and heavy rare earth market, it presents an overall pattern of having value but no market. Factors such as the long-term fluctuation and upward trend of dysprosium and terbium prices in the early stage, the recent poor performance of the light rare earth market, and lower-than-expected downstream demand have significantly hindered holding merchants from raising their quotations.

In terms of news, customs data shows that from January to November 2023, China's cumulative exports of rare earths reached 49,000 tons, an increase of 10% year-on-year, with a total export value of $720 million, a year-on-year decrease of 28.4%. The cumulative imports of rare earths reached 159,500 tons, an increase of 44.7% year-on-year, with a cumulative amount of $2.012 billion, an increase of 41.4% year-on-year. In October, China exported 4,205.8 tons of rare earths with an export value of $37.1 million, and imported 14,315.1 tons of rare earths with an amount of $1.728 million.
