WO3, or tungsten trioxide, has excellent optical properties, so it may be used to prepare an inorganic electrochromic film, that is, a smart film. Such smart film may be applied to glass windows such as buildings, automobiles and airplanes to achieve the performance of heat insulation and heat preservation. According to experts, the optical modulation properties of tungsten trioxide electrochromic films are closely related to their structure.

Experts have explained that in amorphous WO3 (α-WO3) films, the change in light absorption during ion injection occurs only in the near-infrared region, with the largest change at 800-900nm. Their light absorption is caused by electron transitions or small polaron absorption at the W5+ and W6+ positions, and the injected electrons are localized in the 5d orbit of W. For the crystalline WO3 (c-WO3) film, the injected electrons are no longer localized, and their behavior is similar to that of free electrons. The change in optical properties is mainly due to the free carrier scattering caused by the injected electrons, resulting in modulation of reflected light. Moreover, in the case of an appropriate amount of ion injection, the larger the amount of ion injection, the stronger the infrared reflected light modulation.
