Tungsten Trioxide Applied for Cathode Electrochromic Material

Tungsten trioxide, or WO3, together with MoO3, TiO2, Nb2O5, is a typical representative of a cathode electrochromic material, i.e., cathode coloring material, which is more and more widely used in smart windows. So, what is a cathode coloring material?

As the name suggests, a cathode coloring material refers to a type of material that is discolored in a high-valent oxidation state and colored in a low-cost reduction state. The existence of cathode coloring material is because the inorganic electrochromic materials are classified according to different coloring voltages, and the other type is anode coloring material such as NiO, IrO2, V2O5, and the like. The inorganic electrochromic materials mentioned above are mostly transition metal oxides and Prussian blue derivatives. Among them, the transition metal oxide electrochromic material mainly includes elements such as Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Ta, W, Ir, and so on.
