How to Sharpen Carbide Drill Bits

1. Put on safety goggles and canvas gloves. The goggles protect your eyes from sparks and debris.

2. Turn on your grinding wheel. Hold the side of the drill bit next to the broad side of the wheel, so the bit is parallel to it.

3. Holding the bottom of the bit, press the side of the bit lightly against the side of the spinning wheel.

4. Turn the bit clockwise while moving it downward on the wheel. Make sure the surface of the wheel is coming in contact with the cutting ridge of the blade.

After you have sharpened the ridges of the bit, touch any angles at the tip to the wheel to smooth them out and sharpen the edges. Take care to press only the flat side of each angle to the wheel, and not the point.

How to Use Carbide Drill Bits

1. Choose the type of carbide drill bit that is needed for the project or application. Carbide drill bits come in many varieties, such as a standard twist bit or a hole saw.

2. Open the drill chuck by turning it counter-clockwise. The chuck is the hard rubber end at the tip of the drill.

3. Insert the drill bit into the chuck.

4. Tighten the chuck by turning it clockwise. Once the chuck has been hand-tightened, hold on to the chuck with one hand and then press the trigger once to activate the drill. This will ensure that the chuck is tightened properly to secure the drill bit.

5. Place the drill with the carbide drill bit against the surface that you need to drill. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle or perpendicular to the work surface.

6. Press the trigger on the drill and lightly apply pressure to allow the bit to dig into the material.

7. Spray water on the drill to dissipate the heat that is created from the drill bit drilling through the metal or stone.

May Tungsten Bullets Cause Cancer?

Tungsten alloys, being used in battlefield munitions to make them less toxic may cause cancer in soldiers wounded by them.

Researchers at the Forces Radiobiology Research Institute implanted pellets of the tungsten alloys in rats to simulate shrapnel wounds from the weapons. Some rats received high-dose pellets, some low-dose and some pellets of other material for controlled comparison.

All of the rats implanted with tungsten developed extremely aggressive tumors surrounding the pellets. Though the tumors in the low-dose individuals grew more slowly, all of the tumors spread rapidly to the lungs of the rats, requiring researchers to euthanize the animals well before the anticipated end of the study.

Titanium Vs Tungsten Carbide

Hardness
While both materials are much harder than other metals, such as gold and silver, tungsten carbide is harder than titanium and is much harder to engrave.

Ductile
Titanium is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Titanium will bend under high pressure while tungsten carbide will shatter under high pressure.

Weight
Tungsten carbide is much heavier than titanium. Tungsten carbide weighs over 90 percent more than stainless steel while titanium is 43 percent lighter than stainless steel.

Price
Titanium is typically cheaper than tungsten carbide because tungsten carbide has higher production costs. Tungsten is formed in conditions where temperatures exceed 6,000 degrees F.

Applications
Titanium has applications in the aircraft and aircraft missile production industries because it is a very strong but light material. Tungsten carbide is used in many applications, including grinding, machining and polishing.

Detect If Tungsten Carbide Contains Cobalt

1. Locate the packaging for all tools that use hardened metal tips such as end-mills, drill bits, cutters and saw blades.

2. Read the labels on the packaging. If the packaging indicates the tips of these tools are hardened carbide, they have cobalt mixed in with the alloy. As you use these tools, they wear down and create dust contaminated with cobalt.

3. Locate the packaging for any tungsten carbide raw materials. All raw materials have a "material safety data sheet." The MSDS must indicate all of the ingredients used in the manufacturer of the raw materials. If the carbide has cobalt in it, it is listed on the MSDS.
