How to Buy a Promise Ring

Promise rings signify many different things. One common reason for giving a woman a promise ring is to tell her that although it is not yet the right time for an engagement, you will remain faithful to her until that time comes. Other rings signify platonic friendship or a commitment to purity. The latter are often called purity rings and are usually given to a daughter. Many ring styles are available, but with a little research and close observation, you can select a ring that is appropriate for your special woman.

1.Determine what the promise ring signifies. This makes a difference in the finger the recipient will wear the ring on and the style of the ring.

2.Notice what kind of jewelry she wears, especially rings. If she wears jewelry that is mostly small and dainty, she probably will not enjoy a large, chunky ring. If she wears mostly gold, she may prefer that metal over silver. Get to know her preferences through many weeks of careful observation.

3.Observe her hand size and finger length when considering what kind of ring will flatter her hand. For example, if she has very large hands, a tiny stone on a thin band will look lost. Wider bands and longer stones are often flattering for long fingers, while thin bands and symmetrical stones lengthen short fingers.

4.Research her birthstone or observe what colors she often wears if you are considering a colored stone.

5.Look for a ring that best symbolizes the purpose for which you are giving it. For example, if it is a pre-engagement ring, you may want a diamond. If it is a friendship ring, it is usually best to avoid diamonds and anything else that may lead a woman to believe that it is a symbol of romantic love.

6.Find out her ring size. It is usually acceptable to ask a close friend or parent for help on this. If you have any doubts, purchase a standard size ring and keep the receipt so she can get it fitted later.
