Recommendation on Polishing Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide is almost as hard as a diamond. It is used for machine tooling as well as for rings due to its durability. In order to polish it, you may need to use diamond-based cutting tools. If the tungsten has been previously polished, a cleaning solution will remove any built-up debris.

Diamond Paste
Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials available and is used to make various products including drills and end mills for metalwork as well as for rings of all kinds. Since tungsten carbide is so hard, you may need to use a diamond paste to polish its surface. Diamond paste is good for removing scratches as well and can be purchased in different grit sizes. Simply place a small amount of diamond paste on the surface of the tungsten carbide and use a thick rag to polish a particular area.

Bench Grinder
While diamond paste is one method of polishing tungsten carbide, a diamond grinding wheel for a standard bench grinder will work as well. These grinding wheels look like standard grinding wheels, but are made of a diamond enriched substrate that is capable of bringing the tungsten carbide surface to a shine. The same wheel can be used for grinding down tungsten carbide as well as for de-burring the material in a machine shop after it has been cut. Press the tungsten carbide against the wheel for a only few seconds at a time to prevent heat buildup that can lead to injury.
