Tungsten Carbide vs. Titanium

Titanium rings look great new, and usually are less expensive. It is very common for people to mistakenly believe that the two metals are either the same thing or equal. Titanium is a strong metal but not resilient like tungsten carbide. Over time titanium rings will scratch and lose their polish thus needing to be refinished. Tungsten alone (not tungsten carbide) is also much like titanium. Without the carbide it does not gain its extreme hardness and durability. Only when tungsten is combined with a carbon alloy is it transformed into tungsten carbide, the strongest of all metals. Tungsten carbide is also a heavier metal than titanium which is very lightweight, making it more durable and better looking.

Why Your Next Ring Should Be Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide rings are twice as hard as steel, four times harder than titanium and virtually unscratchable. For decades tungsten carbide has been used in mining, aerospace, and other industries that have required a metal that is extremely hard and long lasting. Watch makers were the first to begin using tungsten carbide in jewelry, making watch bands that would never scratch. Since then tungsten carbide has emerged as a serious competitor in the ring industry due to its resilience, strength, and beauty.

All of our rings are 89% Tungsten Carbide, 10% Nickel, and 1% Chromium. We do not use any Cobalt in our rings. We use a nickel-binder alloy NOT a cobalt-binder alloy.

Cobalt-binder is very common because it is more readily available and substantially cheaper than nickel-binder. While in manufacturing processes this may be a fine substitute, in jewelry substituting cobalt for nickel can produce adverse effects, our rings are hypo-allergenic. Cobalt can have adverse effects on skin and is subject to oxidation similar to silver but cannot be removed by polishing or grinding. Nickel-binder carbide is completely safe and chemically inert and will never oxidize. Many other companies will claim to have 'Tungsten Carbide' rings that sell very cheap, but will not disclose their elements. Others will only use Tungsten (see tungsten vs. titanium below).

While we do not recommend intentionally trying to damage your ring, tungsten carbide can endure a lot of abuse. Tungsten carbide rings are an 8.5-9.5 on the mohs scale. This means that the only way to scratch a tungsten carbide ring is to polish the ring with carborundum or grind it with a diamond grade abrasive. Under normal conditions our rings will never scratch or lose their mirror like polish, in some rare instances rings may develop small micro-scratches that are faintly visible but do not diminish from the rings polish or look, if this does happen again, we will gladly exchange your ring for a new one. What does this mean? Whether working in the shop, outside, in the office, or on the mountain you can wear your ring without ever having to worry about scratching or damaging it. If you are curious try rubbing your tungsten ring on a file, if it scratches it is not tungsten carbide, if it does not scratch, it is tungsten carbide.

Tungsten Color

What color is tungsten?  It is not easy to explain with words what the color of tungsten is, so we have created a chart that compares the color of tungsten to other metals used to manufacture wedding bands.  The left side of the chart shows the least white metals and the right side of the chart shows the most white metals.  As you can see, the yellow gold ring is the least white, so it is on the left side of the chart.  Tungsten, titanium, and stainless steel all have about the same color, which is a light grayish color, so that puts them at about the middle of the spectrum.  The lightest or most white color metals are palladium, white gold, platinum, cobalt chrome, silver, and white tungsten.  They are all roughly the same in whiteness, but they do have slightly different hues.  Most people will not be able to distinguish one metal from another if they do not have the other metals to look at as a comparison.  If you compare the whitest metals, you will see palladium has a slightly yellowish hue. While platinum, cobalt chrome, silver, and white gold have a slightly reddish hue.  White tungsten does appear slightly whiter than platinum, but the difference is minimal.

Note: The color of rings can change slightly depending on its surroundings and lighting because metals reflect what is around them.  This is why sometimes rings appear slightly different in person than online.  Another reason is because from one computer monitor to another there may be slight differences in how they display color.  If you have ever been to a store that sells TVs you might recall seeing all the TVs turned to the same channel and noticed there were color variations from one TV to the next.

Scratch Resistance of Tungsten vs. Titanium and other Metals

Ever wondered about how tungsten carbide stacks up to titanium and other materials commonly used to make mens wedding bands?  Below is a chart using Mohs Scale of Hardness to measure the scratch resistance of common materials used in the jewelry business, and as a comparison we have included some materials everyone is familiar with, such as your fingernail or tooth, so you can get an idea of how hard something is.  As you can see, diamonds get a perfect 10 for being the hardest and most scratch resistant  material on earth, which means nothing can scratch it except another diamond.  Tungsten is the hardest and most scratch resistant metal, but non metals such as diamonds, sapphires and other hard crystals can still scratch.  Titanium is far less scratch resistant than tungsten.

Where Should My Engraving be on My Ring

Usually, customers engrave on the inside of the ring.  That means it is the part of the ring touching you finger when you are wearing it.  This way others can't see your special message unless you take ring off.  However, some people want the world to see their engraving.   In this case, they choose to have their engraving done on the outside of the ring.  So, when they are wearing their ring, others can see their engraving message. Customers who purchase wider alternative metal rings, such as tungsten carbide rings or cobalt chrome wedding bands, tend to prefer engraving the outside of their rings becauset hey are wider and the engravings can be done bigger, so others can see it easily. There is no right or wrong place to engrave your ring.  It all comes down to personal preference, and we are proud to be able to offer you the option that suits you best.

Will the Engraving Ring Scratch off?

The durability of an engraving done on the outside of the ring depends on the durability of the metal itself.  On softer metals, like gold, the ring will get scratched and the engraving will wear away over time, but on hard metals like tungsten, the engraving will not wear away as it is very difficult to scratch the ring.  Engravings on the inside of the ring will not wear away no matter what metal you choose, as long as you wear the ring on your finger.  For the engraving to wear away, that would mean your skin is tougher than the metal, which is not possible.  Wearing a ring on a necklace could rub away an engraving on a gold ring over time.

What is Laser Engraving Ring?

As the name suggests, the use of a laser is involved with this style of engraving.  In reality, a laser does not actually engrave your ring, as engraving involves etching or carving.  A laser actually burns your personal message on to the surface of the ring.  So, the correct term should be "laser marking", but most people refer to it as laser engraving and the name has stuck.  Laser engraving can be done on any metal as well.  Many fonts and symbols are available.  In fact, just about any image or font can be done with a laser engraver, as long as we can get it into the proper file format.  If you would like something custom laser engraved on to your ring, chances are we can do it.  Please contact us with your request and we will provide you a quote.

Tungsten Carbide Jewelry

Tungsten Carbide is a great deal harder than titanium and steel and has been used for many years in industry where a sharp blade or cutter needs to be in constant use and not get damaged.

Tungsten carbide is now being used in jewellery, especially for rings. The designs are very modern as well as some being the more classic court wedding rings, but all have the advantage of being even more durable than gold, platinum or titanium, as they can only be damaged by extremes, such as being struck with a hammer! This makes them the ideal ring for any man in a hard manual job.

A binder is used in the production of tungsten carbide which can be either cobalt or nickel. Cobalt is the cheaper option with many manufacturers choosing this in order to reduce their costs and improve profit margins. Tungsten carbide made with a cobalt binder can react to the oils in the skin resulting in a discolouring very similar to tarnished silver. Although tarnished silver can be polished or cleaned, a ring made from tungsten carbide with a cobalt binder will retain the discolouring as it is not just confined to the surface of the ring.

We use a Nickel binder in our tungsten rings which although is more expensive is chemically inert so that a chemical reaction does not take place. This will result in a tungsten carbide ring that will retain its finish and not suffer the same fate as a cheaper cobalt ring. Although nickel is used in the manufacture it is within the tolerance of current EU legislation and is completely hypoallergenic.

The one piece of advice I would offer, would be to check which binder is used in any tungsten carbide ring that you intend to purchase and to avoid cobalt. If the retailer does not know which is used then they are either using cobalt or have no knowledge of the product which they are selling.

Due to tungsten carbide rings being so durable it is not possible to size these rings so it is very important to purchase the correct size. We are happy to exchange any ring within 30 days of receipt.

Tungsten Jewelry Information

Tungsten is very rare in the world.  It is also a strategic material including wolframite and scheelite and only wolframite can be work to Tungsten Jewelry which is even fewer.Tungsten Carbide Powder is the primary processing for wolframite it' a a kind of grey powder then to be the tungsten carbide alloy ,it is remarkable that it's highest melting point of all the non-alloyed metals and the second highest of all the elements after carbon(Diamond)

Tungsten is delicacy, thousands times polish is not just for our design but also for spectrum it's shiny.
Tungsten is disposition, under the shiny face is the tough and sedate heart.
Tungsten is the metal of man,he need to savor slowly. Steady and restrained.
Tungsten Rings are the most wear-resistant rings available on the planet.
Tungsten is about 10 times harder than 18K Gold, 5 times harder than tool steel, and 4 times harder than titanium. Tungsten measures between 8 and 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. (Diamonds are a 10 - the highest.)
Due to their extreme hardness, Tungsten Rings will hold their shape and shine longer than any ring on the market.
Tungsten rings have been referred to as "Permanently Polished Rings."
Tungsten rings will NOT bend.
In the event of an emergency, a ring can be removed by a medical professional.
Each Tungsten ring is individually hand-crafted using assorted diamond abrasives and polycrystalline diamond tooling.
