Tungsten oxide (YTO), also known as yellow tungsten oxide, formula WO3, is the main tungsten oxide product in China in the 1980s. It is a yellow powder that is insoluble in water, soluble in alkali and slightly soluble in acid. Its density is 7.16 g / cm3; its melting point is 1473 °C; its boiling point is about 1700 °C. Mainly used in the system of high melting point alloys and cemented carbide, tungsten wire and fire gas sensitive materials, but also for photocatalyst materials.

Varistor material, although tungsten trioxide nonlinear is not very strong, but has high dielectric constant, so there are still suitable for its performance, nonlinear devices such as working under low voltage, in order to improve the performance of WO3 varistors, scholars have conducted research on tungsten based ceramic varistor material, it is mainly to change the dopant, the content of impurities and the sintering temperature. Some conclusions have been made that the addition of appropriate amount of Co2O3 in the WO3-Na2CO3-MNO2 system can improve its nonlinear performance and can be made into ceramic capacitors.

Since the discovery of the electrochromism of tungsten trioxide films at room temperature, scientists have done a lot of research and achieved many fruitful results. The electrochromic effect makes it possible to be used as thermal control coating material for smart glass, automotive glass and spacecraft. In addition, it is also expected to be applied to high-density storage, image display, laser printing and optical switching devices.
