What Are the Different Tungsten Products?

Tungsten products generally include everything from household items to aerospace technology. The metal is almost as dense as gold and has the highest melting point of any metal in purest form at 6,192°F (3,422°C). These properties popularize the use of tungsten in many applications. Tungsten has a wide range of industrial use when combined with other elements and industrial metals to make metal alloys or superalloys.

People use tungsten products daily without realizing it. Extreme heat resistance enables thin tungsten wire to be used as the filament in incandescent light bulbs, for example, and when combined with calcium and magnesium, it becomes fluorescent lighting. This quality also allows tungsten to be incorporated into the heating elements of heaters and furnaces. Artisans also might use tungsten oxide in ceramic and glassware glazes, producing a yellowish hue. Comparable to gold in hardness, the metal may substitute for gold or platinum in jewelry making, as tungsten is hypoallergenic and virtually scratch resistant.

Tungsten weights or powder might also be implemented to enhance the driving force in golf club heads. Tungsten combined with copper, iron or nickel may be used in making high-quality darts or for the strings of certain musical instruments. Commercial aircraft, race cars and yachts contain tungsten products, as the metal’s density provides counterweight, weight and stability.

Tungsten alloys are frequently incorporated into the turbines of aircraft engines as well. The metal is a constituent of various military items, as tungsten products are a part of the nozzles of projectile rockets and armor penetrating missiles. Cobalt, iron, nickel and tungsten also are the components used in cannon shells and grenades.

Tungsten inert gas, or TIG, welding uses a durable tungsten electrode to produce a stronger binding force when welding various metals. Tungsten or metal alloys may be cast from molds or particle sprayed to provide strength. Durable, long-lasting tungsten grinding wheels may be used in dentistry, metal or stone cutting and woodworking. When combined with steel or carbon, industries use tungsten products for construction, drilling and mining as well. Unaffected by oxygen, alkalis or most acids, the metal is commonly used as bearings, pistons, valve seats and other machine parts where friction, heat or corrosion are factors.

Medical tungsten products include the emitter coils in X-ray tubes and the shields used to protect personnel from radiation exposure. Calcium, magnesium and tungsten phosphorus convert X-rays into visible light for viewing. Tungsten is also typically used in liquid crystal displays and the manufacturing of microchips.

What Is Tungsten?

Tungsten is a metallic chemical element classified among the transition metals of the periodic table of elements. It is well known for its strength and durability, which make it extremely useful in a wide range of industrial applications. Some consumers also own products which contain tungsten or were produced with the metal. The world's major sources of this element are Russia, Austria, China, and Portugal, where it is extracted from minerals such as scheelite and wolframite.

This element is not found in a pure form in nature. When it is isolated, tungsten in a very hard, brittle, gray to white metal that is extremely corrosion resistant. It has the highest melting point and tensile strength of any metal, and it also has the lowest vapor pressure point. The metal is identified with the symbol W on the periodic table of elements, a reference to its alternate name, wolfram. Tungsten's atomic number is 74.

People have known about the existence of tungsten since at least the early 1700s, when observers noted that the metal interacted with tin. In 1784, the de Elhuyar brothers managed to isolate it in Spain, using tungstic acid extracted from wolframite. Tungsten has classically been a very valuable metal, since its durability and strength make it extremely useful for military and industrial uses. The name of the element comes from the Swedish tung, or “heavy,” and sten, for “stone.”

One of the most famous uses of tungsten is as a filament in light bulbs. The metal is also used in an assortment of alloys to increase their hardness and tensile strength. Many structural metal alloys use it since the metal has an extremely high melting point, and the element is also used to make wear-resistant tools. While these tools can be expensive, many workers like them because of their durability and long lifetimes.

Tungsten does have some safety precautions. Dust from the metal can be flammable or explosive, and it also irritates mucus membranes, such as those inside of the nose and mouth. In some regions, tungsten has been linked with serious infections of the lungs in people who work with the element on a regular basis without adequate protections. Exposure to the metal has also been correlated with increased rates of cancer, although hard evidence to turn the correlation into causation has not been uncovered.

Tungsten Carbide Jewelry Has Become More and More Popular

Tungsten jewelry is available in a range of colors compared to traditional jewelry. Tungsten jewelry is naturally a silvery grey tone, but it can be plated with other colors. Black tungsten rings are very popular and are often decorated with laser-engraved details. Some tungsten jewelry is enhanced with gold, rose gold or silver plating.

Tungsten jewelry is hypoallergenic which is intimate for people who have sensitive skin. Many people have metal sensitivities, making it difficult for them to wear sterling silver jewelry or even gold jewelry. Tungsten is rarely alloyed with common skin irritants, so the jewelry is ideal for individuals who get rashes from other metal jewelry.

Tungsten jewelry does not tarnish, develop a patina or rust. Sterling silver jewelry will tarnish over time and require routine polishing. Titanium rings develop a blue patina, which will need to be cleaned off by a professional if you don't like the way it looks. Stainless steel jewelry can gradually rust if exposed to a lot of moisture. Tungsten jewelry are very low-maintenance compared to similar types of metal jewelry.

Tungsten jewelry can show your personality perfectly. Many tungsten fashion jewelry are very urban and stylish, featuring a variety of desirable details and designs. You can also design your jewelry by engraving patterns, characters and numbers you want on the surface or inner side. Choose bright shiny tungsten ring or pendant if you want to add some cool accessorizing to your routine. Men’s tungsten rings and women's tungsten rings are available in both the wedding jewelry and fashion jewelry categories.

Tungsten Alloy in Waste Handling

Nuclear waste is unstable containing elements α, β and γ radiation and is accompanied by heat generation of unwanted material. Nuclear waste into the environment can cause water, air and soil pollution, and enter the body through various means, when radioactive radiation exceeds a certain level, you can kill the organism's cells and interfere with normal cell division and regeneration, causing the genetic cell mutation information. Is the use of deep geological methods. Common type repository mine, located 300 to 1500 meters deep. Structure of the library include natural barriers and engineered barriers to prevent the waste from leaking radionuclides in the package, but it is difficult to ensure that up to hundreds of years in the packaging material from corrosion, formation does not change.

For protecting personnel from contact with radioactive waste materials tungsten can be used to produce sample pots and transport containers in a variety of shapes and sizes. Tungsten provides a superior level of attenuation in comparison to alternative materials such as lead, especially for gamma radiation. This can reduce the wall thickness and weight of the sample vessels, making them easier to handle. Tungsten alloy can also be used to produce shielding components for waste or fuel handling systems, such as gamma gates.

The Introduction of Tungsten Alloy in Industrial Shielding

Tungsten alloy is an ideal solution for industrial shielding applications because it is a strong durable material, which can withstand harsh environments and has excellent radiation attenuation characteristics.

Within the industrial sector there are a variety of applications for high energy radiation sources including:
1.Industrial radiography / Non-destructive testing (NDT) - to detect faults in pipelines and metal components and structures;
2.Process control and flow monitoring - to measure thickness, density or flow levels during manufacturing processes;
3.Cargo scanners - advanced gamma ray inspection systems are used to inspect objects in shipping containers;
4.Oil and gas exploration - geo-logging techniques use gamma rays to analyse rock strata and reveal potential deposits of oil or gas.

In all these applications tungsten shielding is used to protect personnel from exposure to harmful radiation, whilst tungsten collimators are used to focus the radiation beams onto the target areas to provide accurate information to the user.

The benefits of tungsten for industrial shielding including:1.excellent radiation attenuation;2.reduced physical thickness of shield and collimators without compromising shielding efficiency;3.non-toxic;4.can be machined to tight tolerances;5.tough and durable, suitable for harsh environments;6.no special handling or disposal requirements.

Tungsten Pyramid Fishing Sinkers

Tungsten Pyramid fishing sinkers also has a line eye like bell sinkers, which giving it an inverted pyramid profile when tied. They are excellent tungsten fishing sinkers for holding a rig in place in sandy bottoms, or in rough water, the pyramid is probably the best sinker for ocean conditions. It casts well and is a tenacious anchor, it excels in strong currents with any bottom condition. Their streamline profile causes them to sink quickly, and their flat edges prevent them from being rolled along bottom in fast currents. And also it is a superb sinker for bay and ocean fishing. The one drawback is that its stubborn feature often gets it securely snagged on the rocks or other submerged matter. So it's not a good choice for rockfish or river angling.

Tungsten pyramid fishing sinkers is a staple piece of tackle for striper bass and surf fishing as follows. When pyramid fishing sinkers are used in water bodies with sand-floor or mud-floors, the tungsten fishing sinkers will bury themselves into the bottom if the bottom is soft and if it is on hard bottoms, the flat sides will prevent the pyramid from rolling with the current.

For longest time,tungsten pyramid fishing sinkers are made from lead. Other metals are replacing it although lead is still used nowadays. Lead is banned in some fishing areas and anglers are forced to use other sinkers which made from non-toxic materials. The main reason for the coming out of the alternatives is that the lead is toxic and is not friendly to the environment. Tungsten based materials made pyramid tungsten fishing sinkers achieve great honor between anglers because of tungsten based materials are agree with the environment protection.

The Introduction of Tungsten Heavy Alloy

Tungsten heavy alloys illustrate the advantages of microencapsulated powders. A brief background of this alloy system follows.

Tungsten heavy alloys generally are refractory metal, which have two-phase composites consisting of W-Ni- Fe or W-Ni- Cu or even W-Ni-Cu-Fe, some tungsten alloy is added Co、Mo、Cr, etc. They have very high melting point and have a density twice that of steel and are more than 50% heavier than lead. Tungsten content in conventional heavy alloys varies from 90 to 98 weight percent and is the reason for their high density (between 16.5 and 18.75 g/cc).
Nickel, iron and copper serve as a binder matrix, which holds the brittle tungsten grains together and which makes the alloys ductile and easy to machine. Nickel-iron is the most popular additive, in a ratio of 7Ni:3Fe or 8Ni:2Fe (weight ratio). The conventional processing route for tungsten heavy alloys includes mixing the desired amount of elemental powders, followed by cold pressing and liquid phase sintering to almost full density. The matrix alloy melts and takes some tungsten into solution during liquid phase processing, resulting in a microstructure through which large tungsten grains (20–60µm) are dispersed in the matrix alloy. The as-sintered material often is subjected to thermo mechanical processing by swaging and aging, which results in increased strength and hardness in the heavy alloys.

The majority of current uses for WHAs (tungsten heavy alloys) are best satisfied with the W-Ni-Fe system. Alloys such as 93W-4.9Ni-2.lFe and 95W-4Ni-lFe represent common compositions. The addition of cobalt to a W-Ni-Fe alloy is a common approach for slight enhancement of both strength and ductility. The presence of cobalt within the alloy provides solid-solution strengthening of the binder and slightly enhanced tungsten-matrix interfacial strength. Cobalt additions of 5 to 15% of the nominal binder weight fraction arc most common.

How to Extract Tungsten Oxide From the Ores

The production of the tungsten(VI) oxide from the ores is complicated, and not needed for any UK A level (or equivalent) syllabus. All we are interested in is the final reduction of the oxide to the metal.

Pure tungsten can't be obtained by reducing tungsten(VI) oxide using carbon, because it reacts with carbon to make tungsten carbide. Instead, the reducing agent is hydrogen.

Powdered tungsten(VI) oxide is heated to temperatures in the range 550 - 850°C in a stream of hydrogen.

WO3 +3H2 → W + 3H2O

An excess of hydrogen is used, and this carries away the steam produced during the reaction. The hydrogen is dried and recycled.

Great care obviously has to be taken to keep the whole system free of air to avoid explosion risks with the hydrogen at these high temperatures.
