Molybdenum Market Update - May 16, 2025

Molybdenum market update on May 16, 2025

This week, the domestic molybdenum price in China saw a slight upward shift in its overall focus, primarily driven by strong price-holding sentiment among raw material suppliers, stable downstream demand, and the release of news regarding China's special operation to combat the smuggling and export of strategic minerals.

However, post-May Day holiday, the volatile upward trend in molybdenum product prices has heightened buyers' reluctance to purchase at higher levels, leading to a narrower price increase compared to last week.

According to CTIA GROUP LTD, this week's price changes include: molybdenum concentrate up approximately 30 yuan/ton-degree, a 0.86% increase; ferromolybdenum up about 1,000 yuan/ton, a 0.44% rise; sodium molybdate up around 1,000 yuan/ton, a 0.63% increase; ammonium heptamolybdate up approximately 1,000 yuan/ton, a 0.45% rise; molybdenum powder up about 2 yuan/kg, a 0.48% increase; and molybdenum oxide up approximately 30 yuan/ton-degree, a 0.84% rise.

According to the China Iron and Steel Association, in early May 2025, key monitored steel enterprises produced a total of 20.83 million tons of steel, with an average daily output of 208,300 tons, down 8.4% month-on-month. By region, daily steel output decreased by 32,000 tons in Northeast China, 69,000 tons in North China, 57,000 tons in East China, 1,000 tons in Northwest China, and 49,000 tons in Central-South China, while it increased by 16,000 tons in Southwest China.
