Impact Minerals' wholly owned Arkun nickel-copper and platinum group metals project, located on an emerging property in southwest Western Australia, has identified a number of high priority targets for rare earth elements (REEs) and rubidium in recent soil geochemical results.
The company said the anomalies occurred in significant areas within a few hundred meters of the individual survey geochemical traverses.
Each traverse was long enough to extend well away from the target area into areas of “background” in order to establish the relative anomalism of various metals. Impact says it is clear from the soil results that the central portion of the Arkun project area is strongly anomalous for rare earth elements, and six of the targets were identified as requiring follow-up work.
The REE includes both heavy and light elements, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium, ytterbium, cerium and lanthanum. The area has not been previously explored for REEs or rubidium.
General Manager Dr. Mike Jones said the soil results are an "exciting result" that supports the company's belief that the Arkun area is a highly prospective part of the Yilgarn Craton." Arkun continues to surprise us with our discovery of numerous target areas for rare earths and rubidium ...... Although we are not exploring for these commodities, it is a promising area and sometimes you find things you weren't looking for," he said.
"The broad areas where rare earth elements and rubidium occur suggest that additional drill targets may emerge with further work. The area remains under-explored, Dr. Jones said." Our work suggests that this emerging play is indeed under-explored," he said.
"The region hosts the Greenbushes lithium-tantalum mine (owned by the Talison Lithium joint venture) and the Julimar nickel-copper discovery, which is further evidence that this part of the state has the potential for world-class deposits in a variety of commodities."
Impact Minerals is now preparing for a follow-up field inspection and sampling aimed at prioritizing more detailed soil geochemical and ground geophysical investigations, extending to the surrounding (privately owned) paddocks.
Land agreements are being pursued, but access to the targets will be limited until the end of the harvest period as most of the paddocks are currently under crop cultivation.
