Tungsten carbide is what most tungsten rings are made of

Tungsten carbide is what most tungsten rings are made of. It is incredibly durable but rather difficult to make. Tungsten carbide is a mixture of tungsten and carbon atoms within a structure formed by another metal, generally either cobalt or nickel. To form the metal tungsten powder, which is then mixed with the cobalt or nickel, you mix the carbon, tungsten and metal oxides and then heat until a bond is formed between the elements. After you mix the powder with the cobalt and add wax you mill the powder and then mold into the desired shape.

Tungsten-Steel Alloys

Tungsten-steel alloys are extremely hard and are made by combining tungsten and steel. They only require a small amount of tungsten compared to the amount of steel used. These alloys are used in many high speed applications such as rocket engine nozzles.

Tungsten Rings

Tungsten rings come in a variety of designs. They're made of tungsten carbide generally and many feature gold overlays or diamond insets. Most are a silver that resembles platinum or white gold but you may also purchase black tungsten rings that may also feature overlays or designs. Tungsten rings are not expensive and may be purchased for as little as $50, as of the date of publication, although the black tungsten rings generally cost more than that.

Conclusion
Tungsten is an extremely durable and cost-efficient way to produce a variety of products. There is probably tungsten in some of the products around you right now. From televisions to race cars to wedding bands, tungsten may be found in many facets of our lives.

History of Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten is a resilient steel-gray metal, located in many different ores. While the metal was actually discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1781, its many uses weren't discovered until the early decades of the twentieth century. Tungsten carbide has been used in mining and mechanical applications--everything from light-bulb filaments and x-ray tubes to drill bits.

Discovery
Scheele discovered a new acid which could be made from an ore called tungstenite--later known as scheelite. In 1783 Jose and Fausto Elhuyar managed to isolate and extract tungsten from the ore.

The Twenties and the Thirties
Tungsten carbide was used by the German company Osram in place of diamond drawing dies. Cemented carbide was invented and used for the cutting and milling of iron and steel.

working with tungsten carbide

Organ Problems
When tungsten carbide is swallowed, it can lead to loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The China Tungsten Industry Association states that "reports outside the [tungsten carbide] industry suggest that ingestion of significant amounts of cobalt has the potential for causing blood, heart and other organ problems."

Reducing Exposure
When working with tungsten carbide, you can reduce your exposure by wearing clothing that covers your skin, including gloves and safety glasses; wearing a respirator or working in a well-ventilated area; cleaning work areas using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter or other system that removes small particles from surfaces and the air; and always washing skin that has been exposed to tungsten carbide thoroughly.

Hazards of Tungsten Carbide

The most frequently utilized hard metal in manufacturing today, tungsten carbide, is used to make a wide variety of products, including wedding rings, golf clubs and machinery. Tungsten carbide is favored by manufacturers because it is strong, durable and heat tolerant. It is made primarily of tungsten and cobalt and small amounts of other metals such as nickel. Workers exposed to airborne tungsten particles do not appear to have any adverse health effects, but exposure to airborne cobalt particles can have a serious impact on health.
Eye and Skin Irritation
When the eyes and skin are exposed to tungsten carbide, the result is irritation. In addition, repeated exposure can result in allergies to tungsten carbide, as well as to nickel and cobalt.

Respiratory Ailments
Inhalation of tungsten carbide dust can lead to nose, throat and lung irritation. Repeated exposure to tungsten carbide can lead to a range of serious respiratory ailments including asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and hard-metal lung disease.

Nickel or Cobalt

Which metallic binder is used can have an effect on the final product. For instance, if a tungsten carbide ring is made with cobalt, then it may cause a rash on the finger of the person wearing it, or it may tarnish by coming into contact with the oils produced by a person's skin. Nickel on the other hand does neither of these things, and it creates a safer, more durable product. Unfortunately though, nickel is much more expensive. So like any product, the particular components required should be taken into account before manufacturing to be sure that the final result has all the necessary attributes.

The process for making tungsten carbide is simple

The process for making tungsten carbide is simple. Equal parts powdered tungsten and carbon are mixed together along with a metallic binder. The most common binders currently in use are cobalt and nickel. The mixture is compacted into a shape, and it's then heated to above the melting point of the binder. The tungsten carbide, which is powdered, is then surrounded by the molten binder. As the slurry dries, the binder holds the tungsten carbide in a matrix that's extremely hard and durable. Technically tungsten carbide that uses a bonding agent is a composite metal, but it's rarely an issue.

What is the Tungsten Carbide Process?

Tungsten carbide is an extremely hard and durable metal that's used for everything from industrial applications to men's jewelry. A combination of the extremely hard metal tungsten and carbide mixed together with another metal binding agent, tungsten carbide can a hardness of up to 9.5 on the Moh's scale (not very far below diamond, which is the hardest on the scale). Tungsten carbide is also chemically inert, and will not rust or react with other chemicals. Naturally a steel gray color and coming in a powdered form, tungsten carbide can be molded and shaped through extreme heat and pressure into a variety of shapes and forms.
