Cubic Zirconia Engagement Ring

Cubic zirconia has become a popular economical replacement for diamond engagement rings. Cubic zirconia is considered a diamond simulant, not a synthetic, since it simulates the appearance of a diamond but is not the same as a diamond in terms of composition. However, not all cubic zirconia is the same, and because some of the cheaper stones sometimes have negative reviews, some vendors will try and market their stones in different ways.

1.Understand the different types of cubic zirconia. Quality can vary greatly. Cubic zirconia has gone high tech and high end in the jewelry spectrum. High-quality stones include Winfield's and Interlap brands. Premium cubic zirconia is available with an amorphous diamond coating, which reduces the windowing and shadowing that often give a cubic zirconia away as a fake. Asha is the most popular type of amorphous diamond, or hybrid stone, as it is sometimes called. For a less expensive standard cubic zirconia, look for the Signity brand.

2.Differentiate between synthetic and simulated stones. High-quality cubic zirconia stones haven't always been available and some vendors will shy away from using this as a description and instead call their product a synthetic diamond or simulated diamond. Currently, there are no synthetic (lab-created) white diamonds in mass production. Even the few that are being produced are quite small and are priced on par with a natural mined diamond. Asha or hybrid stones are available at a variety of retailers, including Better Than Diamond, Asha Diamonds and MiaDonna.

How to Insure An Engagement Ring

For many people, an engagement ring is the largest investment they've made thus far in their life. Aside from it's emotional value, it also can be of steep monetary value. Just like a home, you should appraise and insure an engagement ring.

1.Get an appraisal from an independent jeweler, not a gem lab report. A gem lab report is for an unmounted diamond and does not adequately appraise the value of a piece of wearable jewelry.

2.Read your insurance policy. If you currently have a homeowners or a renters insurance policy, read it to find out how much coverage it provides for your engagement ring and other jewelry.

3.Review your deductible. Some policies, depending on your location, may insure the engagement ring without a deductible.

4.Purchase a separate policy for your engagement ring. If your ring is of considerable value, you might want to consider purchasing a separate policy to ensure that it is adequately covered.

5.Take photos of your engagement ring. Having photos of your ring is helpful in the event of a loss.

6.Appraise your jewelry regularly. Reassessment of jewelry is necessary as the value may increase or decrease over time, depending on market conditions. Having periodic appraisals will prove to be helpful in the event your engagement ring is damaged, lost or stolen.

How to Put a Brushed Finish on a Tungsten Ring

1.If you own a tungsten ring, you may want to change the mirror-polished surface to a brushed-looking surface. Tungsten is one of the hardest metals on the planet and is almost as hard as diamond. Traditional jewelry tools will not be able to etch tungsten, so you will need to use something stronger. Tools that are used to polish glass will also provide a brushed finish on your tungsten ring.

2.Secure the tungsten ring in a jeweler's vise. This will prevent it from moving and will protect your fingers from the grinding wheel.

3.Grind a test area. On the underside of the ring, grind a small test area to ensure that you are satisfied with the brushed finish that the grinding wheel creates.

4.Grind the entire surface of the ring. Since the tungsten is so hard, you do not have to worry about taking too much off the surface of the ring. In small, circular movements, grind the surface of the ring. When you complete one area, slightly turn the ring by adjusting it in the vise until the entire outer surface has been brushed.

5.Inspect the ring. If the grooves are deeper than you want, you can dull the surface slightly using polishing compound and a felt polishing wheel. Fit the rotary tool with the polishing wheel. While the rotary tool is running at a low speed, carefully dip the polishing wheel into the compound. Do not completely cover the wheel in compound. Using small, circular motions, cover small areas of the ring at a time, wiping off any excess compound with a rag. Polish the entire ring until the surface has the desired finish.

Tungsten Ring Information

History
While Tungsten Carbide has been used in tools since developed in Germany in 1922, Tungsten rings have become popular additions to the jewelry industry only recently. Its primary application remains in the mechanical industry, although it gaining popularity as durable and attractive jewelry.

Features
Tungsten is a hard and dense metal that is mined from Wolframite ore. It has the highest melting point of all metals at 6,100 degrees F and is very hard when combined with a carbon alloy.

Identification
Tungsten rings are light grey, the color of steel. They are very difficult to scratch or damage and retain their shine and polish much longer than other metals.

Significance
According to Tungsten World, tungsten rings make popular men's wedding rings. They can be plain and smooth, faceted, or inlaid with a band of gold.

Considerations
Tungsten is so hard when bonded with carbon that, according to Eternal Tungsten, the military uses tungsten for armor piercing ammunition. Tungsten World reports that tungsten is 10 times harder than gold, 4 times harder than titanium, and measures between 8 and 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.

What Is Tungsten Ceramic

An incredibly strong and dense metal, tungsten can be combined with ceramic to make rings and other fine jewelry. Tungsten ceramic rings are becoming a popular choice for many wedding bands due to their durability and beauty.

Identification
Tungsten is a steel-gray metal. When paired with tungsten, ceramic is often polished black for greater contrast.

Strength
When processed with carbon at high temperatures, tungsten forms tungsten carbide, the hardest metallic substance in the world. Tungsten ceramic rings have unmatched strength.

Tungsten ceramic polishes to a mirror-like finish. It's also highly resistant to abrasions and scratches. It would take deliberate scratching from diamonds or corundum to inflict any damage whatsoever.

Considerations
Tungsten ceramic rings, while nearly impervious to scratching, are not indestructible. Tungsten ceramic's hardness makes it slightly more brittle than traditional jewelry metals, meaning it can be crushed under severe stress.

Warning
Once manufactured, tungsten ceramic rings can not be resized due to tungsten's remarkable hardness.

Tungsten Comparisons

Tungsten carbide is four times harder than titanium and about twice as hard as steel. Titanium is almost half as heavy as stainless steel. Tungsten carbide is much heavier than titanium and almost twice as heavy as stainless steel. Titanium and other metals are much more ductile than tungsten carbide. A tungsten carbide ring will shatter into pieces under pressure, while rings made of other materials like titanium will bend and warp, not shatter under pressure. No other metal is more heat-resistant than tungsten carbide.

Properties of Tungsten Rings

Tungsten carbide rings are a very popular choice for consumers in the market for wedding bands. This type of ring offers many benefits over rings made of other materials like, titanium, gold, silver and steel. Tungsten carbide is a man-made material that is formed when tungsten is combined with carbon. This type of ring is one of the hardest, most durable types of rings available.

The Moh's scale is used to reference the hardness of materials; this scale assigns values that range from 1 to 10. Diamond is the hardest material available with a hardness rating of 10. Tungsten carbide's hardness rating is 9; there are very few materials harder than tungsten carbide. Its tensile strength is up to 500,000 PSI at room temperature, and at 1,650 degrees, tungsten carbide offers the highest tensile strength of any metal. This material melts at 6,170 degrees Fahrenheit.

Picking the Ring Out

No one ever said that picking out the engagement ring had to be a solitary event. If you can without your intended knowing, ask one of her friends or family members to go with you. Be sure to know her ring size before you go. A lot of couples actually shop for rings together. It's can be a bonding moment to try on rings. You don't have to buy the ring then; go back at a later time and pick it up.

Engagement Ring Tips

In the vast world of engagement rings it's difficult to know which one to buy. Engagement rings have traditionally symbolized the promise of a lifetime of love and commitment. You want to give her a ring that shows you understand her taste and style. Find out if she gravitates to a specific style or prefers a particular type of stone.

Diamonds historically are the stone of choice in this type of ring. With some planning and research, you are sure to find a ring that will thrill the recipient. Diamonds come in different shapes; an "ideal cut" diamond means that the stone was cut to bring out its best qualities. This cut showcases the diamond's brilliance and allows light to travel down and come all the way back up. Needless to say, these rings are generally the most expensive.

Many engagement rings have a round stone; they complement a wide variety of fingers. Likewise, a square diamond comes in an emerald, princess or radiant cut. They are both classic and elegant. Heart-shaped cuts are a little whimsical and are perfect if your loved one has an eclectic style. Other shapes include oval, Marquise, pear and trilliant, an upscale cut in the shape of a triangle.

Gem Stones
If you are buying this ring for someone who is a bit nontraditional, you might want to go for an atypical engagement ring. Gem stones come in a wide variety of colors and types. You can choose a stone that is the favorite color of the woman you love. Choose a gem stone that has a high ranking on the Mohs scale. This is a scale that determines the hardness of the mineral. Turquoise and opal rings are gorgeous, but after years of wear and tear they will break apart.

Sapphires are a great choice, because they've received an 8 on the scale. Many people choose blue sapphires for their engagement rings, but these stones come in many colors.

Another unusual choice is topaz. This gem also has a rating of 8 on the Mohs scale. Though this stone comes in an abundance of colors, pink is highly valued because it's so rare.

You can also pick out your partner's birthstone. January is garnet, February is amethyst, March is aquamarine, April is diamond, May is emerald, June is alexandrite, July is ruby, August is peridot, September is sapphire, October is opal, November is topaz and December is tanzanite.
