Molybdenum market update on April 24, 2025

The domestic molybdenum market in China is performing relatively well overall. Despite the interplay of bullish and bearish factors, most molybdenum product prices continue to rise, and actual transaction volumes remain substantial. However, due to intense price negotiations between buyers and sellers, the extent of price increases is relatively small.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, trading activity is high. In addition to increased inquiries and purchasing enthusiasm from downstream users, the recent price rise has significantly heightened suppliers' profit-taking sentiment. In the ferromolybdenum market, with the May Day holiday approaching and current ferromolybdenum prices at a low level, steel companies are actively tendering for ferromolybdenum. Furthermore, the stabilization and rebound in steel prices have boosted confidence in the ferromolybdenum market. In the molybdenum chemicals and products market, a cautious wait-and-see atmosphere prevails. With average demand from end customers and limited upstream market momentum, holders are generally maintaining rational pricing.

News update: According to the China Iron and Steel Association, in mid-April 2025, the social inventory of five major steel varieties in 21 cities was 9.28 million tons, down 5.6% month-on-month, up 40.8% from the beginning of the year, and down 25.0% year-on-year. By region, all seven major areas saw varying degrees of decline in steel social inventories month-on-month, with East China recording the largest reduction in both volume and percentage. By variety, in mid-April, the social inventories of the five major steel varieties decreased month-on-month, except for a slight increase in cold-rolled coils, with rebar showing the largest reduction in volume and wire rods the largest percentage drop. Year-on-year, the social inventories of all five major steel varieties declined to varying degrees.
