Yellow Tungsten Oxide History

Yellow Tungsten oxide is an oxide form of tungsten, appearance is yellow powder. It has two different grain sizes and color. When grain size is 1.5um, it is light yellow. When grain size is 15um, it is yellow green. Although they have different appearance, their property is similar.

Discovery of yellow tungsten oxide can be dated to 1841. Chemist Robert Oxland studied the first process of producing tungsten oxide and sodium tungstate and was granted for patent. Yellow tungsten oxide is our main oxides product in 1980s. So we have elaborate study and application of it.

Yellow tungsten oxide main application includes:

1. Tungsten powder and tungsten carbide powder, then used to produce tungsten metal products as well as tungsten alloy products, such as tungsten copper alloy, nickel tungsten, tungsten nickel ferro, tungsten silver, tungsten rhenium, tungsten thorium.

2. Tungsten chemical products. The most widely applied is tungstate compounds. Sodium tungstate can be used as photocatalyst, ferro-steel inhibiter, lead tungstate, zinc tungstate, cadmium tungstate, sodium tungstate, barium tungstate, rare earth tungstate illumination fluorescer and so on. Besides that, yellow tungsten oxide can be used to produce ceramic paintings. It has catalytic property, so can be used in oil industry.

3.Nano yellow tungsten oxide has good sensitivity, can be used as anti-fire fabric and gas sensor.

After founding of New China, tungsten concentrate exploration starts from zero. By learning from Russia, we set up tungsten concentrate metallurgy industry system gradually. In 1960s, Many tungsten concentrate enterprises established in Jiangxi and Hunan. We then starts exporting ammonium paratungstate and yellow tungsten oxide, profit then increases. It provides financial support for industry construction and exporting foreign exchange in difficult period. Exploration of tungsten concentrate also causes serious pollution. At that time, yellow tungsten oxide mainly uses acidic method, high temperature heating method has severe damage to environment, but yellow tungsten oxide price is very low. So at that time, tungsten product exporting to earn foreign exchange is on the sacrifice of environment.
