Recently, according to the official website of the Jiangxi Provincial Market Supervision Administration, in recent years, the Ganzhou City Market Supervision Bureau has seized the opportunity to establish the National Tungsten and Rare Earth Industry Metrology Testing Center. By building a professional technical service platform and deeply implementing the "Three Comprehensives and One Proactive" metrology testing service, it has promoted the transformation of Ganzhou from a "resource treasure trove" to an "industrial highland," actively empowering the high-quality development of Jiangxi’s tungsten and rare earth industries.
Focusing on Industrial Testing Needs to Enhance Support Capabilities
Aligning with the development trends of the tungsten and rare earth industries, the bureau comprehensively analyzed the precise measurement needs across the upstream and downstream industrial chains. It strengthened exchanges and cooperation with top domestic research institutions, introduced advanced testing concepts and equipment, and established the province’s only rare earth magnetic material testing and traceability laboratory. An innovation research team focused on magnetic materials was formed, bolstering soft power in scientific research. The center now boasts 128 metrology verification and calibration capabilities and 105 CNAS-accredited calibration capabilities for the tungsten and rare earth industries. Its services cover all major rare earth production areas in China as well as 12 countries and regions, providing robust technical support for the development of the tungsten and rare earth industries.
Focusing on Industrial Upgrading Bottlenecks to Enhance Problem-Solving Capabilities
The bureau established the Tungsten and Rare Earth Industry Metrology Testing Branch of the China Metrology Testing Society. Targeting common and critical measurement challenges faced by tungsten and rare earth enterprises, particularly measurement technologies ensuring consistency and stability in rare earth magnetic material products, it tackled 28 industry technical difficulties, such as "in-situ online temperature calibration of cemented carbide sintering furnaces." It also guided the development of eight local metrology technical standards, including the "Calibration Specification for Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Magnetic Field Measurement Coils," injecting new vitality into the transformation and upgrading of the rare earth industrial chain.
Focusing on Unleashing Industrial Potential to Enhance Service Levels
Leveraging its technical advantages, the bureau facilitated the recognition of Ganzhou’s rare earth new materials and application cluster as a National Advanced Manufacturing Cluster. It invested over 10 million yuan in collaboration with enterprises to advance scientific research breakthroughs. Experts were dispatched to provide metrology assistance to over 800 enterprises, delivering more than 50,000 batches of calibration and testing services. Additionally, it offered "one-stop" customized metrology services to 83 rare earth enterprises, contributing to Jiangxi's tungsten and rare earth industry output value exceed 100 billion yuan.
According to the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, in the first half of 2024, the revenue of Ganzhou’s tungsten industry from enterprises above the designated scale reached 15.84 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 0.8%. In 2023, the revenue of the tungsten industry from such enterprises totaled 31.9 billion yuan, accounting for approximately one-third of the national total. Per China Tungsten Online, Ganzhou boasts abundant tungsten mineral resources, representing 70% of China’s reserves of this type and 60% of the world’s, with tungsten ore production accounting for about 20%-30% of the national total. It is a major tungsten production hub in China and globally. Ganzhou has identified and confirmed reserves in 106 mining areas, with total proven reserves (WO₃) of 1.17 million tons, of which 445,000 tons are A+B+C grade reserves, accounting for 38%.
In terms of the rare earth industry, Jiangxi is a primary region for ion-type rare earth resources in China, with Ganzhou serving as a key rare earth production base. It has developed a relatively complete rare earth industrial chain integrating "resource extraction, smelting and separation, deep processing, downstream applications, and recycling."
