The Professional Darts Corporation (also known as PDC) was initially formed as the World Darts Council in January 1992, and is now the leading professional body in the sport with over £7 million in prize money being paid out on its global circuit of tournaments.

The WDC was formed after 16 top professional players, along with managers Dick Allix, Tommy Cox and John Markovic, decided to break away from the British Darts Organisation to take the sport to a new level.

The first WDC event, the UK Masters, took place in October 1992 and the first World Championship was played over the 1993-94 festive period, establishing the partnership with Sky Sports which remains to this day.

The World Matchplay event followed in the summer of 1994, and four years later the World Grand Prix was introduced to the calendar to give three major televised events.

In July 2001, the Board of Directors who had carried the PDC forward since its inception decided to step down in favour of a specialist team, headed by promoter Barry Hearn, who came in as Chairman.

The PDC has built up a reputation as the leading innovator in terms of staging professional darts tournaments and as such is constantly looking towards the future and improving the organisation in every area.

Five ranking tournaments are staged live on Sky Sports each year, broadcasting to a global audience of more than 300 million viewers, and 2005 saw the introduction of the Premier League Darts to great success.

The tournament has grown to become the UK & Ireland's biggest indoor sporting event, being played across 15 league nights around the country, before the top four players then take part in the Play-Offs, and has expanded to be staged in arenas in front of crowds of up to 10,000 fans across a four-month period.

The PDC's commitment to spreading professional tungsten darts worldwide led to the Las Vegas Desert Classic being introduced to the calendar in 2002 and the arrival of the UK Open in 2003, which included a series of qualifying tournaments for professional players which now form part of the PDC Pro Tour.

The first professional tournament in China was staged in 2004, and the worldwide development has continued with the inclusion of more international qualifiers taking part in the PDC World Championship - with countries such as Japan, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia represented.

At the early time, after studied electrochromism of tungsten trioxide researchers found that the films color change due to the hydrogen ions and electrons are simultaneously injected to it.  Besides the chemical reaction process is reversible. However, It also led many scholars believe that tungsten trioxide gasochromic also cause by the hydrogen ions and electrons injected. But after study found that double-injection model of gaschromic is more complicate than electrochromic’s. In the double injection model of gasochromic, the coloring process is by dissociate H2 into H atoms or H ⁺ which is absorbed to catalytic Pt particle surface, H atom transfer from the metal particle surface to the surface of the tungsten trioxide film, and then injected into the tungsten trioxide film. Then make the color of the film change. The bleaching process also adsorbed O₂ which is on the catalyst surface, then transfer to WO₃ film surface, forming a strong chemical activity of O atom or O^2-, so that it can attract out H ⁺ which is exist in film, and with H ⁺ to form H₂O molecules. Therefore H₂O released from the film causing discoloration of the film. From this we can see that fade and coloring is an irreversible chemical reaction process.

Under a low temperature condition, the recrystallization will occur by adding some metals to the wire surface which is an important process when the wires act as reinforcement material in metal matrix composites because of its damage to the mechanical properties of non-sag tungsten wires.

The activated recrystallization was studied both for nickel plated and palladium plated 0.18 mm cold drawn doped tungsten wire. A recrystallized structure formed in both types of wires after annealing at 1100°C for 100 hours, but their structural features were different. Palladium presence will lead to recrystallizing behavior, which was very similar to that of un-doped tungsten wire, whereas the behavior of nickel plated wire was similar to the general recrystallization of doped wire, except for the much lower recrystallization temperature. This indicated that palladium was more effective as an activator than nickel was.

It was shown, using Atom Probe Field Ion Microscopy (APFIM) analysis, whose grain boundaries and lattice dislocations could act as fast paths for diffusion of activators in tungsten wire during annealing. The presence of the large potassium bubbles and the segregation of activators on potassium bubbles indicated that the effect of activators was to neutralize the impeding influence of potassium bubbles on dislocation movement and boundary migration.

Two types of nickel rich precipitates were found. One was a Ni (W) solid solution, which formed on the bubbles at grain boundaries, and another type, with Ni4W structure, was found on the potassium bubbles connected with dislocations. Palladium rich precipitates were present only in triple junctions. Their structure could not be established.

The connecting rod to the light displacer comprises, and is preferably formed from, a high density material of at least about 15 grams such that the connecting rod is heavier than the displacer alone. Such a heavy connecting rod provides the required reciprocating mass to match the reciprocating mass of the compressor piston, and the wobbling of such a heavy mass does not result in a significant undesirable vibration. The connecting rod can be more than three times the weight of the displacer.

Heavy connecting rod is provided by forming the rod of a tungsten alloy which has a density of 17 grams per cubic centimeter. Tungsten is particularly desirable for use in the connecting rod because it has a density of greater than 15 grams per centimeter, is machinable and has the strength required for a driving element.

In a specific embodiment, the compressor piston is about 22 grams and the displacer is only about 4 grams. By using a heavy tungsten connecting rod which is 18 grams, the total weight of the displacer assembly can be made to match the weight of the compressor piston.
