Tungsten Concentrate Import and Export Decrease, Tungsten Carbide Increase

According to the data show that in 2005 to 2014 China import and export volume of tungsten concentrate in general shows a downward trend, and carbide exports have seen a growing trend (specific data as shown below).

During China's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the total import amount of tungsten products (including tungsten concentrate) is 29,900 tons, with an annual import 5,993 tons. Expected in the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, the total imports of tungsten will be reduced. Comparing with the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period will reduce about 18 percent.

In tungsten carbide export side, during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period the total export volume of tungsten carbide is 15,800 tons, with an annual export of 3,195 tons. It is expected in the "12th Five-Year Plan" period tungsten carbide total exports will reach to 24,100 tons, with an annual export about 5000 tons, increased 50% than the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period’s.

China total import and export volume of tungsten concentrate decreased, while total export volume of tungsten carbide is growth and the reasons are as below: first is the development process of Chinese tungsten industry; second is the restructuring of the tungsten industry by Chinese government; Third, the development trend of the times. 

Chinese tungsten industry technology and equipment has significantly improved through absorbing advanced technology and new conception. At present, China tungsten smelting technology and product quality has reached world advanced level, So China tungsten industry slowly change export products’ type from raw materials to tungsten finished products. So tungsten carbide export volume has significant increase. In addition, because tungsten is a strategic resource, in recent year, Chinese government increased tungsten resources conservation and management, to a certain extent, limit the export of tungsten raw materials. And with the development of economy and society, the high-end product requirements of tungsten have been far higher than the demand for tungsten raw materials. On the other hand, International market increase investment projects of tungsten terminal applications such as high-performance carbide rods, tungsten NC blade and tools other, which means a higher-end market value of tungsten products with better market efficiency.
