Tungsten oxide is an electrochromic material. As you may have known, there are two types of electrochromic materials. They are inorganic electrochromic material and organic electrochromic material, and the tungsten oxide nano particles belong to the inorganic electrochromic material. And there is a process of electrochromism no matter what kind of electrochromic material it is. So, do you know to what the change in the color of electrochromic materials relates?

Experts say that an electrochromic material with an active material undergoes a redox reaction under an external electric field, thereby losing electrons. And the energy level of the material changes to cause a change in color. It can also be said that the change in the color of electrochromic material is closely related to the degree of electrochemical reaction that occurs. So what caused this phenomenon? The most important cause of this phenomenon is the high resistance of transparent conductive electrode (ITO). The current is transferred to electrochromic layer through ITO at the electrode, which will inevitably cause a pressure drop. The farther away from the electrode part, the more obvious the pressure drop, and the redox reaction of the electrochromic material is more delayed.
