China's first tungsten carbide rod of φ2 mm was successfully developed and manufactured in 601 factory in September 7,1958, and from then on, China got rid of the control from foreign companies and filled the gap of tungsten carbide rods production in Chinese history.  

 

In March 1958, the task of developing tungsten carbide rods of φ2 mm was given by the state to 601 factory. Factory formed a research group and continued to explore in this field. After an arduous exploration, the group used paraffin to make a mold, and found out the best wax type and optimal dosage. The proper lubricant reduced friction between the mixture and mold wall. A small gadget, which shaped like a small pagoda was put into the mold to spread operating pressure of materials, and thus solved the problem of pressed film. Through constant trying, the group succeeded inimproving the cutting efficiency of rods. As a result, China can finally produce its own tungsten carbide rods without relying on its import, and began to meet the needs of domestic mining explorations.
