Darts: Temple’s on Centre Stage in York Open Qualifiers

WHITWELL-ON-THE-HILL ace Terry Temple inflicted a first defeat on Brian Dawson in the qualifying stages of the Streamline Taxis York Open Darts Championship.

Dawson won the first four stages of the Red Dragon Darts-sponsored event, including a 5-4 victory over Temple having hit back from 4-0 down in stage three.

In the stage five final, Dawson was within a leg of victory before his Ryedale-based opponent won the match 5-4.

Temple had included a 17-darter and a 180 for a 19-dart leg against Dawson's 180 and 100 finish for 12 darts followed by legs of 15, 18 and 18 darts as Yorkshire county player Dawson went 4-2 up.

Despite Dawson hitting a 180 to leave 37 after 15 darts, Temple conjured up legs of 16, 20 and 180 for 18 darts to take the match.

The semi-finals oozed quality with Temple defeating fellow PDC Pro Tour player Darren Johnson (20) 4-2 with legs of 13, 19 and 14 darts, while Dawson, with three 15-darters and a 13-dart leg, beat PDC pro Mark Lawrence (2 x 15) by the same margin.

York's Russ King (15 and 180 for 16) was unfortunate to meet an in-form Johnson in the quarter-finals as he went down 3-2 to legs of 15, 16 and 180 for 15.

The other last eight results saw Temple beat Chris Gill 3-1, Dawson (18 and 19) beat Colin Hendry (21) 3-1 and Lawrence take a 3-0 win over Steve Kemp Snr.

Acomb's Chris Thompson hit the highest checkout of the day with a 161, while there was a 113 from Andy Jones and 100 from Dawson.

Further 180s were secured by Neil Hart (2), Tracey Marron, King, Steve Vine, Darren Johnson and Dawson.

Thirty-two players entered the fun Blind Pairs which followed the singles event and Temple made it a double delight when partnering Dave Kerr to win the final over Trevor Day and Ian Atkin.

Ranking stage six takes place on Saturday at Huntington WMC in York. Registration closes at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.

Tomorrow, the King William in York will host the M & M Darts Show Knockout 7, with the winner and runner-up qualifying to play at an exhibition featuring Wayne Mardle and Peter Manley later this month.

Register at 8.15pm for an 8.30pm start.

Premier League Darts 2014 Results: Scores, Standings and Analysis from Aberdeen

Week 11 of Premier League Darts produced yet another thrilling night of tungsten action as the world’s best players collided in front of a sell-out crowd in Aberdeen.

It was a double-game week for both Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis, with the pair clashing in a fast and furious affair to close the show.

There was big movement in the Premier League table after last night’s matches, as we see below with a complete results list:

World No. 3 Lewis kicked things off against home favourite Gary Anderson and found himself 6-0 down in double-quick time.

Anderson opened with a 138 checkout and looked like inflicting a whitewash on the man from Stoke-on-Trent, but he rallied back to make it 6-4 before Anderson closed out the match.

It was then the turn of the sorcerer, Phil Taylor, who took on his apprentice, Van Gerwen. The 16-time world champion taught the current king of darts how it’s done, with a 7-4 victory.

The win saw The Power extend his unbeaten Premier League run to six matches after enduring a shaky start that included Van Gerwen whitewashing him on the competition’s opening night.

Bullseye grans are at the top in world of darts

BEATING the competition to become champions of a darts league is a big deal for anyone.

But the achievement is even more impressive for two grandmothers, aged 91 and 88.

Joan Burrows, 91, and Joan Dawson, 88, are both long-term members of the all-woman Distaff Club, Canvey.

They have both played darts for the club for a combined total of 89 years and have just been crowned winners in the doubles final of the female darts league.

The inspirational women represented the club when they went head-to-head against Carol Parkin and Marion Kingston, of Canvey Rugby Club, at Smallgains Hall, in Creek Road.

By taking top prize, the two friends have shown age is nothing but a number.

Mrs Burrows, of Maurice Road, Canvey, said: “I was quite chuffed, but my family were more chuffed than I was. It was lovely.”

While remaining modest about their achievements, the two Joans are examples of how a healthy lifestyle can take you a long way.

Mrs Burrows, who lost her husband a year after moving on to the island almost 40 years ago, joined the club to make friends and insists she is lucky to still be in such good health.

She said: “It is just me. I just have a go at things. If people ask me do you want a go, I say yes. I never say no.”

She seriously does have a go at everything. She is also a member of a tai chi club.

She said: “I go every Tuesday night at the Catholic Hall, and they are a lovely crowd.

“I have been going for six to seven years. It is just something to keep me going. It is all about the way you move your hands and arms. I do two-hour lessons every day.

“I’m just lucky. I don’t look back.

I had a wonderful life with my husband and one daughter. She does tai chi with me and also plays darts.”

The other Joan, Mrs Dawson, of Rosbach Road, Canvey, is all praise when she speaks of her friend of 40 years, but is also pretty remarkable in her own right. She said: “We have been friends for over 40 years.

She is marvellous – especially if you consider her age.”

Mrs Dawson goes to a salon every Monday without fail to get her hair done. She’s a fan of cycling and heads to a Conservative ladies’ group every week.

She said: “I have never had major health problems. We are lucky. I thought I had hip troubles six years ago, but it was nothing serious. I rode a bike until I was 70.

“It’s all about good exercise, so there is no problem in the end.”

The most inspirational thing about the two women is that they are still determined to carry on regardless of their age.

Mrs Dawson said: “While I am fit and well, I will continue to keep playing darts.”

The Distaff Club meets at the War Memorial Hall, High Street, Canvey, every Monday.

William Hill Becomes Sponsor of the World Darts Championship

William Hill Online are delighted to announce they have signed an initial two-year deal with the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) to sponsor the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London.

The seven-figure deal will see Britain’s biggest bookmaker become the title sponsor of the event - which will now be known as the ‘William Hill World Darts Championship.’

The 72-player tournament, staged by the PDC and broadcast live on Sky Sports, will be held throughout December and January, with play spanning the Christmas and New Year period before the first world champion of 2015 is crowned.

Reigning champion Michael van Gerwen – who defeated Peter Wright on New Year’s Day to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy - is the early favourite with the sponsors to retain his crown, closely followed by 16-time World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.

The William Hill World Darts Championship will be the online firm’s second darts sponsorship, following on from their successful three-year sponsorship of the Grand Slam of Darts at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall from 2011-2013.

Kristof Fahy, Chief Marketing Officer at William Hill, said, “The World Darts Championship is a great addition to our brand sponsorship portfolio.

“It’s a great fit. The UK’s biggest bookmaker and the biggest event in Darts.”

Andy Lee, Managing Director of William Hill Online said, “We are delighted to announce our sponsorship of the William Hill World Darts Championship.

“Our online business has shown strong growth in recent years and we believe sponsorships like this will help us reach new audiences and continue to help us grow.’

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn said: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome William Hill as the new title sponsor for the World Darts Championship.

“Since first being staged in 1993-94, this tournament has grown into the biggest in darts, not only in terms of prize money and stature – with over £1 million paid out in the sport’s richest event - but also with the fantastic crowds who flock to Alexandra Palace every year.

“With over 50,000 fans attending live and hundreds of millions more watching on Sky Sports and around the world, the William Hill World Darts Championship has an amazing global reach.”

Hearn added: “We welcomed a record crowd to Alexandra Palace during the 2014 World Championship and have been amazed by the interest we’ve already had from darts-hungry fans who want to secure their seat at this year’s William Hill World Darts Championship.

“With qualifying events beginning to take shape worldwide, the focus of players is also shifting towards securing their places in what promises to be a special event.”

Phil Taylor ready to rise above the Ashes in PDC World Championship

The 16-time darts world champion is relishing a return to the tournament at Alexandra Palace and the contest beating the viewing figures for cricket's showpiece event.

Phil Taylor has won 16 world titles but still feels nervous in the first round of the PDC World Championship. Photograph: PA Wire Photograph: Pa Wire/PA
December is here and, naturally enough, so is darts. With the PDC World Championship looming, the draw for the first round has now been made, staged with a typically bravura sense of fizz live on Sky Sports in the company of the charismatic Dutch world No2 Michael van Gerwen.

Such is the stratification in talent at the very pinnacle of the game – Phil Taylor is odds-on to win his 17th world title; the fourth favourite, James Wade, is a 22-1 shot – that the draw itself is in truth something of a formality, a signal that darts' festive year-end showpiece, the jewel in the darting crown, is decisively in train.

Speaking at the launch of the championships at a small but very chic private dining room in Mayfair, Taylor himself was unable to shed a great deal of light on either of his potential first-round opponents; no doubt due study will now be made of Ian Moss ("I do know Ian but I don't know his game") and Rob Szabo ("I probably know him but I can't place him"). For all his status as a darting colossus, with £6m in prize money already banked, Taylor is still hugely excited by the prospect of trying to extend his utter domination of the game's breakaway tournament.

"The first round is the most nervous," he said. "It's a great format. If you go one set down when best of three, trust me you are shitting yourself but the pressure's on them as well. So hopefully if you do lose the first set they're thinking: 'I'm going to knock Phil Taylor out here.'"

Taylor, of course, thrives on such anxieties. In a sport that is entirely a matter of iron competitive will, his thoughts have already turned to the prospect of another meeting with Van Gerwen, who beat him on Sunday night in the final of the Players Championships. "I've just been planting little seeds in Michael's head [over lunch]," he said.

"Three games in a row, that was hard work for me last night. With the world championships coming he's saying: 'Me and you are going to play again.' And I said: 'Yes, but I can have a day off before this time?' I'll get New Year's Day off if I get to the final."

When the two met in last year's PDC world final at Alexandra Palace, Taylor attacked aggressively from the start, overwhelming the Dutchman in a boisterous, thrillingly unbound occasion. It has since been hailed as one of the great darts championship performances, although Taylor says he can hardly remember anything of the match and still has not watched it again ("every time I watch myself on TV I have to go on a diet"). "It's a sign you were playing well when you can't remember it," he added. "The games you lose are the games you can remember."

Taylor turned 53 this year and remains rather playfully adamant that he will retire four years from now. Not that the PDC will be ready to let a champion who has in effect carried it, Atlas-like, through the dawn of its satellite-era world championship slip away easily. The sport is enjoying one of it periodic booms. Prize money at Alexandra Palace is all set to top the £1m mark, with the champion taking home £250,000. The staging of the championship – cast as a boozy stag do-ish night out – is an enduring success.

Best of all, TV ratings are healthy. The Ashes in Australia may be the headline sporting event but darts will still expect to beat its viewing figures over the course of its 20 sessions from 13 December to New Year's Day.
