Following a fall of almost USD5.00kg W in a little over three months, European ferro-tungsten prices are showing some signs of stabilising this week, with a Central European consumer tender concluding around a USD1.00kg W higher on Tuesday compared with end user sales from early last week. Mainstream prices ranged between USD38.90-39.80kg W d.d.p on Wednesday, and both suppliers and buyers speculated intensely over whether prices of the noble alloy were beginning to turn around.

According to monitoring last week (March 11-17) by MOFCOM in 36 medium and large sized cities, price of material for production like tungsten continued to drop in the last four weeks.
Of major material for production, the prices of rubber, mineral products, chemical products, energy resources, steel, non-ferrous metal, materials for agricultural production and building materials dropped, and that of materials for light industry remained unchanged.
Prices of rubber dropped 5.3%. As the price of natural rubber in Southeast Asia dropped and the price of chemical raw materials decreased, the price of rubber declined by 7.9% in the last five weeks. Prices of mineral products dropped 0.9%, of which zinc ore, iron ore and copper ore were down by 1.5%, 0.9% and 0.2%, and tungsten ore rose by 0.4%.
Price of chemical products dropped 0.6%, of which sulfuric acid, phenol and styrene were dropped 1.3%, 1% and 1% respectively, and phthalic anhydride, pure benzene and caustic soda dropped by 0.7%, 0.5% and 0.3% respectively. The price of energy resources dropped 0.6%, of which coke, crude oil and raw coal dropped by 1.6%, 1.4% and 0.3% respectively. The production of steel kept increasing and the market supply was sufficient, which brought down the price of steel.

Indonesian tungsten and tin mining company PT Timah says it will establish two subsidiaries to support its operations in Myanmar.
PT Timah president director Sukrisno is reported as saying that one subsidiary will operate the firm’s tungsten and tin mine in Tanithary (Tenasserim]) province while the other will market its Myanmar-produced tungsten and tin.
“We expect the two new business units, which will be fully owned by Timah, to begin operations in 2014,” Sukrisno reportedly said.
The Indonesian firm’s president said he expected exploration to start in June, and is currently processing its permits with the Myanmar authorities.

Ceo George Roach told that Premier African Minerals could bring its RHA tungsten project in Zimbabwe into production by the end of this year.
“Our milestones, in terms of RHA, are to define a compliant resource statement within the next several weeks, and after that, the completion of the mine study that will confirm costing,” Roach said. “We could be back in production later this year,” he added. The aim is to create a low-cost, low-tonnage but high-grade mine, at which Premier will produce tungsten concentrate, he said. “We have chosen properties where we were confident that there was nothing that could be construed as preventing them from ever becoming mines,” Roach said. “Our properties are in various stages of development, and RHA is in the very late stages."

A PROJECT to reopen a disused tungsten mine has moved another step forward thanks to a £75 million construction contract. Wolf Minerals announced that it had appointed fellow Australian firm GR Engineering to design and build a processing plant for the scheme at Hemerdon.
The plant will take around two years to build. Wolf announced last year that it had secured all the finance for the £130 million project near Plympton which will create the world's fourth-largest tungsten mine.
The mine is anticipated to come into production by the end of 2014 and will produce 5,000 tonnes of tungsten concentrate and 500 tonnes of tin annually over the following decade.
The site is set to create 230 directly employed jobs and could create as many more, with the recruitment of a number of senior roles currently taking place.
Wolf Minerals managing director Humphrey Hale said: "Wolf is very pleased to continue working with GR Engineering to develop the Hemerdon Project as we have established a good working relationship over the past three years."
"This is a major achievement for the project team as the EPC contract was tendered to the market and this result is in line with the Definitive Feasibility Study estimate announced in May 2011."
