Affected by the holiday of International Labor Day, the transaction in domestic tungsten market was quiet last week (Apr. 29-May 3, 2013), waiting for the guiding price for May to be published by Minmetals and Ganzhou Tungsten Association. The news that China's State Reserves Bureau (SRB) plans to buy about 100,000 t of tungsten conc. remained unconfirmed, but some of enterprises started to purchase tungsten concentrate. For example, China Molybdenum Co., Ltd sold 850 t Scheelite concentrate with transaction price of 1,810 yuan/mtu. The tungsten conc. price in domestic market went up slightly, compared with the previous week. While the price of ferrotungsten and tungsten carbide powder kept at 185,000-188,000 yuan/t and 288,000-292,000 yuan/t respectively.

Ammonium paratungstate market (APT) quiet, prices hold firm.
Owing to the guiding prices, some ammonium paratungstate (APT) suppliers raise offers. But the transaction prices did not recover, and most of the APT market participants hold wait-and-see attitudes towards the future market. European Ferro-tungsten Prices On May 8，2013

Mainstream ferro-tungsten prices in the European market have increased almost USD2.00/kg W since last Wednesday, with sales between USD45.00-45.60/kg W in warehouse Rotterdam being concluded already this week.
As of Tuesday, few stockholders in Europe were willing to offer material for sale below USD46.00/kg W in warehouse Rotterdam, and it appears prices are set to lift further in the coming days as traders sit on stocks of material on hand.
Ferro-tungsten originating from Vietnam has been the principle material in Europe for much of this year, with export prices from China often USD5.00/kg W above figures from Vietnam due to higher tungsten concentrate prices and export quotas.
However, delayed export shipments from the large Vietnamese producer through April and now May have led to diminishing stocks of material in Rotterdam.

The Price of Tungsten Concentrate and APT in May

Tungsten Concentrate Price (WO3 65%, wt) continued to rising, which has been more than 6% and the price has already hit 125 thousand RMB per ton. Downstream demand of tungsten are mainly on Tungsten hard alloy(about 50%) and Tungsten steel (30%), tungsten concentrated in the Carbide (about 50%). While terminal demand of Tungsten wear-resistant tools, cutting tool and machine tool will depend on industrial development. The output of tungsten concentrate increased 3% in 2012. Domestic production of add-value industry rose to 10% after November 2012, which indicates that domestic demand was stable, which is resulted from demand uptrend news about store.
The price of Tungsten hard alloy has gone up about 20% and Ammonium Paratungstate (APT) has increased 15% from last quarter of 2012. Therefore, tungsten concentrates maybe the main driving factor in the uptrend of the price of tungsten, which indicates the feature of cost-driven. In the context that the global economy is still in a stage of adjustment, it is necessary to see the situation of downstream demand (mainly monitoring data of April Ammonium Paratungstate export), the rise of tungsten concentrate price may indirectly transmit to downstream though affecting the price of Ammonium Paratungstate (APT). In this regard, the price of tungsten may continue to rise. On the contrary, the price may remain stable.
Chinatungsten Online predicted that tungsten concentrate price and APT price will remain the uprising trend in the next several months.
