Rare earth market update on April 10, 2025
The domestic rare earth market in China exhibits a mixed pattern of gains and losses. Influenced by numerous uncertainties, the price trends of light and heavy rare earths have slightly perged.
The prices of neodymium oxide and praseodymium-neodymium oxide have dropped by approximately 3,000 yuan and 4,000 yuan, respectively, while the prices of holmium oxide and terbium oxide have risen by about 50,000 yuan and 60 yuan, respectively. Notably, the price surge of holmium oxide today was remarkable, reaching an increase of 10.31%.
In the light rare earth market, praseodymium-neodymium prices continue to retreat, though the decline remains modest. This is mainly due to low consumption enthusiasm from magnetic material companies and other buyers, coupled with relatively ample spot supply in the market. However, supported by the wide application of light rare earths and the robust development of emerging industries, suppliers still maintain a strong inclination to hold prices firm. In the medium and heavy rare earth market, an overall upward trend is evident, primarily driven by tightening supply and China’s export control measures on certain heavy rare earths. Nevertheless, market transaction volumes still need improvement.
On the news front, Canada announced on April 8 that a 25% reciprocal tariff on U.S. automobiles would take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on April 9. On April 9, the European Union voted to pass its first round of retaliatory tariff measures against the U.S., imposing up to 25% tariffs on a range of American products. Also on April 9, China’s State Council Tariff Commission issued a notice stating that, starting from 12:01 p.m. on April 10, 2025, the tariff rate specified in the *Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Imposing Additional Tar Announcement on Imposing Additional Tariffs on Imported Goods Originating from the United States (Tariff Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025) would be adjusted, increasing the additional tariff rate from 34% to 84%.
