Gold plating is often used to make a less expensive chain, one made out of a baser metal, look more expensive. However, the problem is that these chains can develop a magnetic charge. What you need to do when this happens is scramble the atoms again so they aren't aligning, which will break the magnetic effect. This will take heat and impact, if you want to demagnetize the chain.

1.Drop the gold chain on the floor. If your chain has developed a temporary magnetic charge, a good drop will rattle the atoms and remove the charge in many cases.

2.Lightly strike the chain with a hammer. If the force of a drop isn't enough to dispel the magnetic charge, then strike the chain lightly beginning at one end and working your way down to the other. The impacts should be hard enough to effect the magnetic field, but not hard enough to deform the gold-plated chain.

3.Heat the chain in an oven. Heat can dissipate a magnetic charge, especially a light or incidental one. Put the chain on a cooking tray, and then put it in the oven at different temperatures. Somewhere between 300 degrees Fahrenheit and 500 degrees Fahrenheit should be enough, but start at the lowest and work up in 100 degree increments. Leave the chain in for several minutes, but not much longer.
