How to Choose Darts from Different Percentages of Tungsten

Very high percentages of tungsten, such as 98% tungsten darts, have a wonderful dense feel and a surface that resists wear for a long time. However, the high concentration of tungsten powder also makes them brittle, and more prone to break if dropped on hard surface such as a concrete garage floor. Very high density darts also are difficult to make, requiring special and expensive tooling to machine the barrels.
To get around those problems, most tungsten darts are now made of mixtures ranging from 70% to 95% tungsten. Lower density barrels are much cheaper, as they are easier to manufacture with automated machinery. Low density darts also has high wear resistance, from skin acid, friction, hitting other darts, falling on floors, etc.
The majority of steel-point darts used by competitive players in league and tournament play are now made of 90% Tungsten. Soft-tip darts are commonly made of 80% tungsten, which is cheaper, less dense, and less brittle. Soft-tip darts are prone to bounce out a lot, and electronic machines are often found in places with hard floors. The softer 80% tungsten darts are less likely to break, while constantly falling in such hard floors. As steel-point darts are more often played over carpeted areas, breakage is a little less of a problem.
Bristle dartboards for steel-point darts have a scoring are that is roughly 20% smaller than most soft-tip boards. With smaller scoring areas on a bristle board, the thinner diameter of 90% or 95% tungsten darts makes sense for competitive steel-point darters.
Budget priced darts are generally made of 80% or 70% Tungsten. Below 70%, most of the benefits of a tungsten dart are lost. Darts made of 60% tungsten or less are very bulky, and have poor wear resistance. The reason for making darts of 70% or less is to get the price down, which generally means taking other shortcuts in the machining process that also result in a lesser quality dart.

As with most products, tungsten darts are not all the same. Raw tungsten does not melt easily, and is not readily made into machinable shapes. Tungsten is generally ground into a fine powder, which is then blended with a variety of other metals that act as binding agents. In the case of darts, the most common blends contain nickel, with smaller amounts of copper and ferrous compounds. The mixture is heated and compressed to make a solid billet or bar, which can then be machined into darts barrels.
Within each percentage range of tungsten darts, there is a wide range of quality. Every company has its own special blend of metals that are combined to make the raw billets. The best darts for competition are also the most expensive to make and the most difficult to machine. Cheaper darts can be made by adjusting the blend by adding softer metals. For instance, a bit more copper or iron may be added. A "softer" blend means that cheaper cutting tools can be used, the tooling won't dull as quickly, and the machinery can produce more darts in a given amount of time.
Different blends may also slightly change the appearance of the finished darts. Some darts look shinier; others have a more grainy appearance. Surface treatments during the manufacturing process can also make a great difference in the appearance of a new set of darts. A wide variety of coatings are often applied to darts barrels, ranging from simple paint or powder-coating to high-tech vapor-deposit coatings such as Titanium Nitride.

Is Cheap Tungsten Darts Reliable?

What about the really cheap tungsten darts at the local "big-box" store? Some darts advertised as "Tungsten" actually have very little tungsten content, even though at first glance they may look similar to a good quality dart. The main giveaway is that these cheap imitation darts will be much larger in diameter & length, for the same weight as a high-quality dart. And the price may be substantially cheaper than most other Tungsten darts. Think in terms of buying gold jewelry at a flea market. There would probably be little or no actual gold in that pretty bauble that sold for a super "bargain" price!
Some common sense rules are universal, no matter what the product is. If a price looks too low to be real, then the tungsten darts are probably not any sort of a bargain.

Which Dart is Right for You?

Darts come in a variety of materials, weights and grips; here I will talk about the different materials used in the production of darts, particularly the main three metals used: brass, nickel and tungsten. Darts will generally consist of a set of three dart barrels, points, shafts and flights which help to stabilize the flight of the dart when thrown; although it is the material of the barrel that is concerned here.
Brass
Brass darts are the most commonly seen types of darts because the inexpensive metal makes them popular in pubs, taverns and at home. Darts made of brass are usually aimed at beginners and are of low cost, therefore making brass a good choice for darts players who have either rarely or even never played darts before. Brass is a softer and less expensive metal than either nickel or tungsten and the drawbacks that come with this include any knurling on the brass grip has the potential to wear down quickly; as well as brass darts having a thicker barrel, because of the lighter metal, which can increase the number of bounce-outs and makes close grouping more difficult.
Nickel
Nickel darts are similarly inexpensive, although do generally cost a small amount more than brass. Darts made of nickel are usually the best choice for beginners who plan on playing relatively frequently because they are made of a harder metal and are therefore more durable than brass because the grip will not wear away as easily.
Tungsten
Tungsten is an extremely dense metal, considerably more so than brass or nickel; this increased density allows more weight in a smaller (thinner) barrel, making close grouping easier while maintaining the weight and minimizing bounce-outs. These high-density tungsten darts resist wear far better than brass or nickel. Tungsten darts are recommended for all darts players who have played competitively at some point and are the darts used by all professionals because having all of the darts mass concentrated into such a small, thin area vastly enhances the control of the dart. When buying tungsten darts, it is important to pay attention to the percentage of tungsten in the dart barrels because it is central to the quality of the dart; in general the higher the percentage the better, and more expensive, the dart is.
To find the right dart for you, it would be a good start to analyze yourself and your skill level; for example, If at any point you have played darts competitively before, or play it quite frequently and are looking to improve your game, then you should look to buy tungsten darts with a higher percentage of tungsten depending on how many competitive games you have played or plan to play.

Tungsten Darts Revolution

- Published on Wednesday, 16 July 2014 18:35
The first darts that were ever used would have been arrows, as used by medieval archers. This was the earliest recording of someone throwing arrows at a target. The earliest darts of the modern times were made of wood with natural feathered flights, usually three, and a small lead ring around the body or barrel to give it weight.
These darts were common right up to the 1950’s and could be found being used at carnivals around the U.K. In France, they can still be found.
Most players were soon using darts made of brass. Brass darts were far heavier than their wooden counterparts and could be made into almost any shape, giving the dart player a far wider choice in design and weight.
The first brass darts had wooden shafts with flights of paper and some with feathers. They later changed to plastic. The choice was getting larger for the player, but many players still today use feathered and paper flights in some countries.
In the early 1970’s somebody machined down an electrode used for underwater welding. These electrodes were made from a mixture of copper and tungsten.
As they were not a true alloy but mixed by a method call cintering they were relatively easy to machine and were considerably heavier than brass. This enabled the maker to keep the dart barrels smaller for the same amount of weight, an advantage when you are trying to throw them at a target of limited size.
Unicorn made the first commercial tungsten darts, and I had the pleasure of trying them at the world trade fair in London in 1971 at the Unicorn stand manned by Mr. Barry Twomlow.
A few years later the manufacturers of tungsten introduced a heavier still material using nickel with tungsten which enables them to introduce a larger content of tungsten, whilst still being able to machine it.
These tungsten billets, as they were known, came in different values from 65% up to 97%, the heaviest billet being the 97%. The material was now 16% heavier than lead, and far heavier than the original brass.
Tungsten not only allowed the player to have a slimmer dart but there was another unexpected bonus. The tungsten did not have that bounce quality that brass had, it was more like lead. When darts collide with each other on the board the tungsten ones appeared to stick close together where the brass barrels bounce off each other.
This allowed for far tighter grouping, which in turn gave higher scores. With the introduction of the tungsten darts, a whole New World of flights and shafts came, mostly for show and not performance.
The so-called Tungsten Revolution also saw a vast increase in the amount of people playing the game and it became a big success for the TV stations.
The Tungsten dart had a lot to do with this huge change in the game.

A melting point lower than the base brazing alloys as solder material, the solder melts when heated, and by wetting and capillary action to fill and maintain operations in the joint gap, and the base material in a solid state, relying on the mother liquid and solid solder mutual diffusion of material formed between the brazed joints.
The physical and chemical properties of brazed parent material is small, welding stress and deformation is small, a large performance difference can be welded dissimilar metals, to complete the same number of welded joints neat and beautiful appearance, simple equipment, low investment in production.
Welding process of the welding machine is first opening water and electric high-frequency welding equipment and then turning on the power panel. Turning the body into the prepared sensor in remote control switch is depressed to start heating. When the work-piece is heated to 830-860 degree melting brazing filler piece to complete the weld seam. The whole process takes about 30 seconds approximately.

Tungsten Dart Origin

The era of tungsten came along in 1970. Barry Twomlow had won the World Championship the previous year with a set of brass darts. Some companies realized the importance of retaining the weight of the darts and at the same time reducing the darts in volume to allow greater visual sight of the highest scoring parts of the dart board.
Tungsten is three times the density of brass. The higher density makes it possible to make a slimmer dart, which creates less air resistance when throwing, and is also easier to group together in a small space like the doubles and trebles. The desired weight can therefore be achieved, without adding bulk. Players became to accept without question that Tungsten darts is more suitable.
