The global volume of light emitting diodes installed in signage and professional displays reached 57 billion units in 2012.

But by 2018, consumption is forecast to almost triple to reach 143 billion packaged LEDs in such displays, according to market analyst ElectroniCast, Aptos, CA, USA.

ElectroniCast Consultants, commented, “The consumption value will increase with rising quantity growth but this will be largely offset by declining average prices.

The Americas and Asia Pacific regions are currently near even in market share; however, the APAC region is forecast to expand at the fastest pace (22.8% per year). Europe, Middle East and Africa today hold a much smaller share of global consumption value compared with the other regions.

Electronicast explains that its 2012-2018 market review and forecast is presented for ”standard-type” versus High Brightness (HB) LEDs used in signage and professional displays. HB LEDs, are defined as component-level bulbs with a lumens/watts rating of 30 lm/W and above; standard-type LEDs have a rating of under 30 lm/W.

This application category includes covers LEDs used signs and displays. LEDs are increasingly used in building facades, large outdoor video screens, digital billboards, sport/stadium displays, small indoor retail displays, food displays in restaurants and supermarkets, signs on taxis and destination signs on mass-transit vehicles, LED and LCD TV screens, among other applications.

The US Department of Energy (DOE), via its Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium (MSSLC), has released its model specification that municipalities and utilities can use as template for procuring LED street lights with integral network and adaptive-control technology. The specification is another step in the MSSLC's goal of helping cities, local agencies, and utilities accelerate the deployment of solid-state lighting (SSL) technology for roadway and parking applications.

Controls dominated the presentations at the Street and Area Lighting Conference (SALC) last year. Our conference report included the news that the MSSLC had released a draft of the controls spec. Now some seven months later the spec is final.

You can download the " Model Specification for Adaptive Control and Remote Monitoring of LED Roadway Luminaires" document from the DOE SSL web site. This new spec follows the original baseline model specification document for roadway luminaires, a financial analysis tool, and demonstration reports released by the MSSLC.

In the aforementioned SALC coverage, we cited an Iowa project that was the first to use the original model luminaire specification. A number of cities in the state banded together, and relied on the MSSLC specification to make a large buy of LED street lights.(By LEDs Magazine)

Lumileds has announced Luxeon CoB, chip-on-board LED arrays up to 6,000 lm with versions with illuminated diameters of 9, 13 or 15 mm.

Colour temp is 3,000K, states Lumileds, with 105 lm/W efficacy and CRI >80; all at 36V nominal forward drop. Versions are are hot tested and specified at 85°C, and are based on metal-core printed circuit boards (MCPCBs).

There are four versions, with typical light outputs of 1,150 (9mm), 1,725 (13mm), 2,300 (13mm) and 3,450 lm (15mm) at 300, 450, 600 and 900mA respectively.

Possible applications? Spotlights, down lights, and replacement of directional incandescents (PAR/AR111, for example). (By Electronics Weekly)

Riding the bleeding edge of technology always comes eye-watering cost, and that goes doubly so for innovative displays. Consider the release in May of LG's 55-inch curved—yes, curved—OLED TV. This soft-edge set will put hard corner haters back the equivalent of a cool $13,500.

LG says the 55EA9800 (as the curved behemoth is formally known) offers an IMAX-like viewing experience, claiming that the curved shape of the screen makes all points "equidistant from the viewer's eyes, eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail." (We didn't realize screen-edge distortion was a problem, much less a problem looking for a solution, but the proof will be in the viewing.)

The curved 55-inch screen uses LG’s proprietary WRGB technology featuring a white sub-pixel, which works in conjunction with the conventional red, blue, green setup to generate a more vivid color output. The television's clear stand also doubles as speakers due to its baked-in transparent film speakers.

If you're looking for a truly IMAX-like experience, promo shots show that you can put up to three screens next to each other—assuming you have more than $40,000 burning a hole in your pocket. If, like the rest of us, you don’t live in a lighthouse to match the rounded shape of the TV, LG also created a wall mount for the 55EA9800, although this means that the curved sides will stick out, despite their very thin profile. (The set is only 0.17 inches thick and weighs around 37 pounds.)

The curved LG TV shares many specs with its flat sibling (model 55EM9700), which is already on sale with a slightly less steep price tag of $10,000.

The LG 55EA9800 55-inch curved OLED TV was unveiled at CES in January. First in line to receive the set is South Korea, where it is priced at KRW 15 million (approximately $13,500) and is due to ship in May. Release dates and pricing for non-Korean markets are coming "in the months ahead," LG said.

Analysts are still unsure whether OLED TVs, including the curved kind, will actually take off with consumers. In fact, the analysts at NPD DisplaySearch estimate that 4K LCD TVs, which sport nearly four times as many pixels as a standard 1080p display, will overtake sales of OLED TVs in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Samsung is still developing the OLED TV that it showed off at CES in January, although the company in currently in a dispute with LG over alleged thefts of technology. (By TechHive)

In a call discussing the company's recent financial results, LG announced it will introduce a smartphone with a flexible OLED screen in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company's vice president of mobile Yoon Bu-hyun said his division was working closely with LG Display to bring a phone to consumers. It's unlikely that we'll see a flexible smartphone — the battery and circuitry should prevent that — but we could see a device with a wraparound display, something like Samsung's prototype from CES.

Manufacturing difficulties often lead to delays in next-generation displays coming to market. LG and Samsung have struggled to release OLED TVs; both have missed several release dates, although thankfully availability is improving. Both companies have also been saying flexible displays are on their way for some time now, but aside from the occasional trade show demo, nothing has materialized.

LG had announced a few days ago that, LG promised curved OLED TVs will go on sale later this year. And investors will be keeping a close eye on whether LG can deliver on its smartphone promise.
