W18O49 Applied for Near-infrared Absorber

W18O49, or violet tungsten oxide, is well-known as a near-infrared absorber because of its excellent near-infrared absorption properties. So, there is no doubt that violet tungsten oxide is popular in the application of energy-saving windows to play a role of high heat insulation. In this regard, some experts have investigated the morphology-controlled synthesis and near-infrared absorption properties of W18O49 systematically for the application of innovative energy-saving windows.

The experts have successfully synthesized various morphologies of W18O49, such as nano rods, nano fibers, nano grains, nano plates, and nano particles, with various sizes by solvothermal reactions using organic alcohols as reaction media and WCl6 and WO3 solids as the tungsten source. And the results showed that W18O49 nanorods of less than 50 nm in length showed the best optical performance as an effective solar filter, which realized high transmittance in the visible region as well as excellent shielding properties of near infrared light. Meanwhile, the W18O49 nanorods also exhibited strong absorption of near infrared light and instantaneous conversion of the absorbed photoenergy to the local heat.
