High-Nickel and Molybdenum Austenitic Stainless Steel Achieved Mass Production

High-nickel and molybdenum austenitic stainless steel (SS) 904L and 254SMO have achieved mass production. Recently, the product development of the stainless steel branch of Gansu Jiugang Group Hongxin Steel & Iron Co Ltd. staged its new products - 904L and 254SMO super SS plates to the market and achieved mass production.

The company’s super stainless steel is a type of product with high molybdenum content and excellent corrosion resistance. Its corrosion resistance is greatly improved compared with 316L.

Among them, Ultra 904L is a high-nickel and molybdenum austenitic SS with very high corrosion resistance. 904L has excellent corrosion resistance to intergranular corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in a dilute sulfuric acid environment. Ultra 904L was originally developed for handling sulfuric acid at ambient temperatures and is now used in a broad range of chemical industry applications, such as chemical papermaking and sewage treatment industries.

Following the 904L, Ultra 254 SMO is a 6% molybdenum and nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steel with extremely high resistance to both uniform and localized corrosion. This product was developed especially for oil and gas offshore platforms and the pulp and paper industry. It is widely used in harsh environments such as high concentration chloride ion media and seawater, such as desalination of seawater, flue gas desulfurization, and various bleaching devices in the pulp and paper industry.

In the first quarter of this year, the steel market was sluggish, and product prices continued to fall. It has taken the initiative in customer development and resource development to increase efforts and speed up the development and production of high-end products.

The super austenitic SS holds high alloy content and low carbon content and has high requirements on the purity of molten steel. It has strong crack sensitivity during production and high resistance to high-temperature deformation. The slab is prone to become brittle, and hot processing is difficult. The high precision of equipment is always the bottleneck that plagues industrial mass production.

The technical research team of the stainless steel branch of Gansu Jiugang Group Hongxin Steel & Iron Company Ltd. has carefully studied and systematically solved the technical problems in the production control process. Two super austenitic SS plates, 904L and 254SMO, were successfully launched to reach the advanced level of the industry. At present, the company has realized industrial mass production of the two high molybdenum and nickel-containing SS plate products and is stepping up the development of 904L and 254SMO cold-rolled SS strip products.
