Tungsten Oxide Nanowires or Make Up Lack of High-End Capacity of Power Batteries

Tungsten oxide nanowires are an important N-type semiconductor material with characteristics of electrochromism, photochromism, absorption, and catalysis, etc. They have been widely used in the fields of power batteries, chemical sensors, and optoelectronic devices, and the recent research shows it may be able to make up a lack of high-end capacity of power batteries.

Tungsten oxide nanowires are prepared by a vapor transport method using WO3 powder as a raw material. The crystal structure and morphology of WO3 nanowires were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The obtained nanowires were hexagonal WO3. In terms of power batteries, tungsten oxide is mainly used as a component of multifunctional electrode materials to improve the overall quality of prepared batteries to compensate for the shortcomings of the current high-end production capacity.

It is reported that the e-tron 50 quattro, an entry-level pure electric vehicle released by Audi recently, is a low-power version of the e-tron. Compared with the performance parameters of the flagship e-tron, the power battery capacity has been reduced from 95kWh to 71kWh. The cruising range has also been shortened from the previous 417km to 300km.

In this regard, the relevant person said that first, as the electric vehicle industry continues to heat up, the launching of low-mileage products may be to meet the needs of users who are gradually derived by market segments. Second, it is probably due to its battery supplier LG, who is insufficient of high-end battery supply. After investigation, the latter is the main reason. Due to the shortage of LG battery supply, Audi can only postpone the launch of the flagship electric model e-tron SUV.

In recent years, affected by the new energy vehicle subsidy policy, many battery companies focused on expanding their production capacity, and neglected the upgrading of product quality, resulting in a more serious polarization of the power battery market, namely excess of low-end product capacity, insufficient of high-end products capacity.

Fortunately, the discovery of other transition metal compound electrode materials such as tungsten oxide nanowires can be a good part of the power battery as it may be able to make up lack of high-end capacity of power batteries, and effectively improve the electrochemical performance such as energy density, service life and charging speed of the battery. As a result, tungsten oxide batteries can alleviate the polarization of today's battery market.
