Tungsten of Xiamen - CCTV

“President Xi has declared that core technology cannot be bought or be begged for. The innovation of technology requires a road not taken. Xi called for courage to explore the uncharted courses and realize the goal that key and core technologies are self-developed and controllable. The initiatives of innovation and development must be securely kept in our own hands.” ---- A CCTV journalist has quoted the speech of president when he summed up in the program of Xiamen Tungsten Industry Development.

On August 9th, 2018, in the documentary TV series “Take a look of economy at the production line” of “Half-Hour Economy” which is broadcasted at 20:00, the innovation road of Xiamen tungsten industry and the its contribution to the manufacturing of high-end tungsten cutting tool have been reported and propagated greatly.

The program focuses on how the technological innovation brings the new market and benefits. It tells the history of the tungsten carbide cutting tool in Xiamen from falling behind to leading the tide. Meanwhile, it is a chance to prove how China is constantly working hard from a major manufacturing country to the world manufacturing power and from “Made in China” to “Intelligent manufacturing in China”. This program also portrays a bright prospect of “Made in China 2025” in which China will develop into an intelligent manufacturing power and a science and technology power. 

Through the recounting of the a few generations who work in Xiamen tungsten industry, this program reviews how Xiamen tungsten industry started from an alumina plant which depended on our resource advantages and exported low-value products of the tungsten in the last century concentrate to an industry with high level of technology. When Xiamen tungsten industry has been gradually aware of its own disadvantages and the production advantages of other countries, it has gone through the process of studies, experiments, failures, summarization and the restart. As a result, the industry has achieved the high level of technology and product quality as Santvik and Kennametal in a short period.

With the innovation and development of technology, the tungsten industry has transformed the superior mineral resource in China from primary commodity of tungsten concentrate which only sells for tens of thousands RMB per ton into the high value-added coating tungsten carbide cutting tool which sells for more than six million RMB. In addition, a lot of new products come with the progress. For example, the miniature tungsten carbide drilling bit of which diameter is 0.3mm is characterized by high accuracy, strength and hardness. This product does not only fill in the blanks of the same kind of product, but also provide the high-quality cutting tools for space industry and other military products restricted by western countries. Besides, these excellent “teeth of industry” can be applied to the production of high-level instrument, such as large aircraft; fighter and so on.

 “In the past, we fell behind other international companies in the road of tungsten industry. In the next three years, we will develop together with top international enterprises. In the future, we will lead the way. It takes five to ten years to surpass.” The chairman of XTC Mr. Huang said when he summed up the prospect of the innovation road of XTC in the program.

XTC is not only the key enterprise in Xiamen, but also the quoted company and one of the top 500 enterprises of the world. In recent years, Xiamen attaches importance to the progress of technology in the tungsten industry and continuously enhances the support and guidance for enterprises. In the beginning of 2018, Xiamen Municipal Government, Political Consultative Conference of Xiamen decided that the topic of this year is “Accelerate the development of quality and efficiency, develop high-end manufacturing industry”. The committee depute Chinatungsten Online to do an in-depth survey about “Suggestions for building high-level tungsten industry base”. A lot of comments and suggestions about how to encourage the development of tungsten industry are put forward in the “Accelerate the development of quality and efficiency, develop high-end manufacturing industry” proposal. Some of them have been accepted by Xiamen Municipal Government.

Therefore, we strongly believe that Xiamen Tungsten Industry established on the starting city of Maritime Silk Road will realize the goal of “Leading the way” in the whole world with the strong research team, the blueprint of “Made in China 2025”, the accumulation of the technology and the support of party committees and governments in all levels, especially the support of Xiamen Committee of the Communist Party of China and Xiamen government.  

Although Xiamen Tungsten (600549) shares closed at 14.17 yuan and dropped by 3.74% on August 2nd which is the lowest of this month, due to the poor performance of its share price in the rare earth sector since early August, we can expect that Xiamen Tungsten will have a better future in the coming years with the completion and commissioning of Xiamen Tungsten Industry Park.
