Tungsten Metallurgy New Technologies Inventor - Zhongwei Zhao

Series of tungsten metallurgy new technologies invented by professor Zhongwei Zhao have been widely used in tungsten enterprises and made outstanding contributions to the Chinese metallurgy position in the world. Speaking of Professor Zhao, many people are full of praise to him in the master clustered metallurgical profession of Central South University.

In the 1990s, Zhongwei Zhao studied for a master's degree from Tian Zhao, the "original ancestor" of the domestic non-ferrous metallurgy industry. One day chatting at the tutor's house, a senior said inadvertently that the separation of tungsten and molybdenum is a worldwide problem. Zhongwei Zhao secretly decided to overcome this problem. "Do what no one else has done before," he said.

China is a big country of tungsten reserves. However, as black tungsten ore is gradually consumed, high-quality and high-grade tungsten resources are becoming less and less. Moreover, in the tungsten metallurgy process, the world problem of solving the deep separation of similar elements of tungsten and molybdenum is also urgent. Professor Zhao said humorously: "Tungsten and molybdenum, is a pair of twins, all kinds of performance are very similar. What we do is to find out the difference between them."

After several years of research, the team successfully solved the problem of deep separation of tungsten and molybdenum that has long plagued the metallurgical industry at home and abroad. The deep separation technology won the second prize in the National Technology Invention in 2001. This technology has been promoted in China for more than 96% of tungsten metallurgical enterprises and has become an essential impurity removal technology in the current tungsten smelting process.

Zhongwei Zhao has been paying close attention to the development of tungsten smelting for a long time, he started from basic theory, through intersection of metallurgy and geochemistry, creatively introduced phosphorus which was considered an impurity in the decomposition process of tungsten ore in the past, and he invented sulfur-phosphorus mixed acid and normal pressure cleaning to treat low-grade co-associated tungsten. The new technology has realized the comprehensive utilization of tungsten, molybdenum, and phosphorus, with a near-zero discharge of wastewater and resource utilization of leaching slag.

Students who have classes of Professor Zhao at the School of Metallurgy and Environment of Central South University always remember his class after graduation. He rarely uses multimedia in lectures, and often uses a small chalk head to succinctly and visually put some very complicated professional theories on the blackboard.

"Scientific researchers are making complicated things simple and making complex problems clear in common language." Professor Zhao told reporters that "teachers should teach people ideas and methods, and teach students how to fish."

Zhongwei Zhao's new tungsten metallurgy technologies have made outstanding contributions to the metallurgy industry in our country. Professor Zhao is an interesting teacher and a very pure researcher.
