US and Australia Attempt to Introduce "Guaranteed Rare Earth Supply"

Australia is a partner of American rare earth that the US "can rely on" in an era of geopolitical complexity and strategic competition, claimed by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. He said it was critically important to work with America to secure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Australian newspaper reported that the Prime Minister Scott Morrison readily said Australia was a partner America could rely on, "a partner that pulls their weight in the alliance". Morrison said he had a good personal relationship with Trump but the alliance was "far more than that". To contribute to a US-led mission in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in the Gulf region demonstrated that Australia is "always prepared to do the heavy lifting when it comes to our alliance partnerships".

A senior US government official revealed that Trump and Scott Morrison announced on a plan to ensure the supply of rare earth. On September 20 in Washington, DC, Trump met with Morrison in White House and held a joint press conference.

The official said on September 19 that the plan will be announced during Morrison’s state visit to the United States. "The two countries want to ensure that the global supply of rare earth is stable and secure." He also said that the goal of the program is to bring together technology and resources to "ensure that the global market is stable, secure, and vulnerable to shocks and external influences."

Scott Morrison said it was critically important to work with America to secure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. While the Trump administration has noticeably stepped up the diplomatic welcome for Australia since Morrison won the election in May, the government is yet to secure an invitation to visit Beijing.

The report said that Trump had overreacted to China's policies on rare earth supply. He believes that it is natural for the great historical advantage of the US to be used to serve the interests of the United States. According to the report, for medium-sized open economies, they rely on rules to freely trade with big countries. Australia needs to maintain a balance between Washington and Beijing.
