A New Type of Tungsten Carbide 3D Printer Nozzle

According to foreign media reports, Dyze Design Company in Montreal, Canada, has developed a new type of tungsten carbide 3D printer nozzle, which has better performance and response speed than traditional nozzles, and its sales price has been announced recently.

Dyze Design is a five-person start-up company specializing in the research and development of components and accessories for 3D printers. On March 10, Dyze Design launched a public fundraising campaign to support the mass production of its latest innovative new tungsten carbide 3D printer nozzles. It is a 3D printer nozzle superior to traditional materials and compatible with the most popular 3D printers on the market, including Ultimaker, Raise3D, Prusa, Lulzbot or Roboze. This new type of 3D printer nozzle is made of high density and high strength tungsten carbide material. It is understood that its crowdsourcing price is $48, and its specifications cover a nozzle of 0.4mm, 0.6mm, 0.9mm or 1.2mm. The delivery time is expected to be September 2018.

Delivery time is slightly longer. I wonder if there will be more competing products of the same kind developed during this period. But using tungsten carbide material to make nozzles for 3D printers, the company is looking in the right direction.

Compared with traditional brass nozzles, tungsten carbide is a very hard and high temperature resistant ceramic material, which is often used to manufacture wear-resistant alloy tools. According to Dyze Design, the use of this material not only enables the nozzle to maintain its diameter while resisting the wear of filler wires, but also allows for better thermal conductivity and higher flow rates and more consistent print quality.

As the basic element of fused deposition 3D printing, nozzle is one of the most important parts of 3D printer. The selection of metal and diameter for nozzle manufacturing has a significant effect on extrusion quality and the success of 3D printing.

But tungsten carbide nozzles can make everything better. Tungsten carbide does not mix with tungsten metal alloys, so ceramics are preferred for wear resistance. Cutting tools for steel and tool steel are made of tungsten carbide. It is also widely used in the mining industry as a plug-in for crushing rock. In addition, the high thermal performance of tungsten carbide keeps the nozzle tip at high temperature, thus achieving faster printing speed without sacrificing quality.

In fact, thermal conductivity ensures that heat can travel to the tip of the nozzle, keeping the molten plastic at the right temperature. Poor thermal conductivity may lead to cooler extrusion, resulting in poor laminar adhesion and greater flow fluctuations. For these reasons, any kind of steel and Ruby nozzles will lead to lower extrusion flow.

It is reported that Dyze Design is launching a Kickstarter campaign for this nozzle. The Kickstarter campaign will end on April 4 with an initial funding target of $15,000. This activity will help them ensure that they can measure extrusion, flow and seepage performance, improve different dies, manufacture more nozzle sizes, and conduct high temperature tests.
