Tips & Warnings for Tungsten Rings Cleanout

Tungsten is so hard that it has to be cut and polished with the same types of tools that are used to cut and polish diamonds. Ordinary tools will not even dent this beautiful metal. One of the best things about tungsten is that it is nearly maintenance free and holds its brilliance and shine with little or no help from you. However, if you really need to clean your tungsten rings, the following tips and warnings should be kept in mind:

First, if your tungsten ring has silver or gold inlays, they will need to be polished with silver or gold polish periodically.

Second, do not leave a tungsten ring in an ultrasonic cleaner for more than one minute. While the metal is quite resilient, tungsten rings are originally made from powdered metal and too much time in an ultrasonic cleaner can cause them to deteriorate.

How to Clean a Tungsten Ring

Tungsten is a hardy and brilliantly shiny metal that is popular for a variety of ring styles, including wedding rings and wide designer bands. More and more people buy tungsten rings, but may be only few people know how to clean a tungsten ring. Here are instructions, hoping it is useful to you:

Step1: Buff away fingerprints using a soft, dry cloth. Tungsten retains its polish forever, so you will just need to smooth away oily fingerprints periodically using a soft, dry cloth.

Step2: Brush away scratches. If your tungsten ring appears scratched, do not worry. It is not. Tungsten is too hard to be susceptible to daily wear-and-tear like scratches. Instead, these "scratches" are small pieces of material that have become attached to the tungsten. You can remove them with warm water and gentle scrubbing with a soft toothbrush.

Step3: Add mild detergent to your cleaning arsenal. For extremely contrary "scratches," you can add a few drops of a mild detergent to a small bowl of warm water and use the toothbrush to scrub the ring in this solution. This will remove any difficult marks and scratches completely.

Step4: Dry the tungsten ring with a dry, soft cloth. If you allow the ring to air dry, you will end up with spots on your otherwise unmarred ring.

The Benefits of Tungsten Carbide Rings

Tungsten carbide rings look like steel, relatively heavy, scratch-resistant and can be combined with other materials, like black or blue carbon fiber or precious metals like gold, to create a special look. This material is a good alternative for various types of jewelry, from wedding bands to engagement rings.

Using tungsten carbide for rings has several benefits.

They do not need regular polishing. The original polish can last the lifetime of the ring.

There is also a difference in price. A tungsten ring can cost from $55 to $150 dollars, depending on the retailer. The average gold wedding band, on the other hand, can easily start well above $100.

Besides, tungsten carbide is a very strong material, compared to the relatively soft gold and silver and it does not cause the allergic reactions the more traditional metals can.

The History of Tungsten Rings

Isostatic pressure sintering led to the development of tungsten which was even harder than before. Tungsten is used in tools, mining, weaponry and even jewelry.

Tungsten rings were originally developed by Osram, a German electric bulb company in the early 1920s; this process to make tungsten carbide has generally been used to create industrial products in place of diamond drawing dies.
