How to Care for Black Tungsten

Black tungsten is a popular material for wedding bands. It is one of the hardest alloys available, often made of titanium and nickel as well as tungsten. A ring made of tungsten will not bend, scratch or break. Tungsten is ideal for those who don't want a flashy, shiny band, and it is very easy to care for. Many tungsten rings are polished by the manufacturer, and because of the hardness of the metal, polished tungsten will remain polished indefinitely.

1.Clean your tungsten jewelry with a soft toothbrush and liquid soap whenever it seems to have blemishes. Tungsten can only be scratched by diamond or the mineral corundum, according to Titanium Jewelry. However, it can pick up materials and debris from things it rubs against.

2.Avoid using chemicals to clean your ring, and do not put it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. These things can cause spotting.

3.Use a polishing cloth every so often if your black tungsten ring has a sterling silver inlay. The cloth will not harm the tungsten, and it will clean the silver effectively.

4.Look out for oxidation spots on black tungsten that do not go away when you clean it. If you see these spots, it means your ring contains cobalt, which reacts negatively with the human body. There is nothing you can do to avoid these oxidation spots, besides not wearing the ring. Always check that a tungsten ring does not contain cobalt.

How to Put a Brushed Finish on a Tungsten Ring

If you own a tungsten ring, you may want to change the mirror-polished surface to a brushed-looking surface. Tungsten is one of the hardest metals on the planet and is almost as hard as diamond. Traditional jewelry tools will not be able to etch tungsten, so you will need to use something stronger. Tools that are used to polish glass will also provide a brushed finish on your tungsten ring.

1.Secure the tungsten ring in a jeweler's vise. This will prevent it from moving and will protect your fingers from the grinding wheel.

2.Insert the diamond grinding wheel into the rotary tool.

3.Grind a test area. On the underside of the ring, grind a small test area to ensure that you are satisfied with the brushed finish that the grinding wheel creates.

4.Grind the entire surface of the ring. Since the tungsten is so hard, you do not have to worry about taking too much off the surface of the ring. In small, circular movements, grind the surface of the ring. When you complete one area, slightly turn the ring by adjusting it in the vise until the entire outer surface has been brushed.

5.Inspect the ring. If the grooves are deeper than you want, you can dull the surface slightly using polishing compound and a felt polishing wheel. Fit the rotary tool with the polishing wheel. While the rotary tool is running at a low speed, carefully dip the polishing wheel into the compound. Do not completely cover the wheel in compound. Using small, circular motions, cover small areas of the ring at a time, wiping off any excess compound with a rag. Polish the entire ring until the surface has the desired finish.

How are Tungsten Rings Made?

Ground tungsten and carbon are poured into a metal die cube containing a ring mold. The mold is subjected to high pressure to push the powder together into a solid ring blank. The blank is then fired in an oxygen-powered furnace at temperatures exceeding 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Only at this obscenely high temperature will the blank's component elements intermingle and solidify as one. Once cooled, any burs or extra metal is removed with high-powered diamond edged saws. Diamond powdered files and sanders are then used to polish the ring until it shines. With this done the ring is ready to be worn. It should be noted that since such rings cannot be re-sized, each one must be constructed to order if it's to be a perfect fit.

What are Tungsten Rings?

Tungsten rings are a decorative affectation which are becoming more popular with men throughout much of the world. Such rings are taking the place of class rings and wedding bands thanks to their durability. They should not be mistaken for being made from pure tungsten, as they're really tungsten carbide. This compound, once shined, will never dull, scratch, rust, or discolor. It's also completely hypo-allergenic. The reason for their popularity is as much an issue of symbolism as practicality. Gold wedding bands have a tendency to deform over time. One made from tungsten-carbide will not, giving the impression that the marriage union which the ring represents will endure as well.

Facts About Tungsten Jewelry

Characteristics
Tungsten, also known as wolfram, is a gray transition metal that is mined in Europe, North America, South America and Asia. Along with its use in jewelry, the element is also used in electric lamps, X-rays and in the development of spacecraft.

Jewelry
In its raw state, tungsten is a very brittle metal that can be easily cut with a hacksaw. In order to create jewelry such as a ring or bracelet from tungsten, it must be strengthened. This is achieved by combining tungsten powder with carbon and another metal such as nickel or cobalt.

Use
Due to the weight of tungsten jewelry, it is not typically used in earrings and pendants. It is more common to find tungsten carbide in rings, bracelets and watches. Jewelry made from tungsten will resist scratching, bending and stretching better than gold or silver.

Appearance
Tungsten carbide jewelry features a darker hue that can be polished to resemble hematite. When mixed with nickel, the resulting appearance is similar to that of platinum.

Care
Due to the metal's ability to maintain shape and shine over time, very little care is required for tungsten jewelry. Retailers of tungsten carbide jewelry caution against cleaning with chemicals or with ultrasonic cleaners, suggesting soap and water instead

Tungsten Ring Features

Traditionally used to make equipment and products for the military and aerospace industries, tungsten is a hard metal that is also used to make rings. While most tungsten rings are made for men, tungsten rings for women are becoming more popular. Tungsten rings offer the benefits of being durable, affordable, hypoallergenic and available in different designs. However, tungsten rings are heavy and cannot be resized.

Durability
Tungsten is one of the hardest metals used to make rings. It is much harder than gold and does not scratch or dent as easily. Tungsten rings do not tarnish and are low maintenance. A few drops of soap and warm water are all that are needed to clean them. The durability of tungsten rings make them a good choice for people who work with their hands or are simply clumsy with jewelry. A drawback of tungsten rings are their weight. Tungsten is about twice as heavy as steel. Also, while tungsten is more durable than gold, it can still crack if struck with high force.

Hypoallergenic
Tungsten rings are an alternative for people who suffer allergic reactions from other metals. Tungsten rings are 100 percent hypoallergenic. A metal that is hypoallergenic means that it is not likely to cause an allergic reaction. Many people are allergic to jewelry made from other materials because they contain nickel or cobalt. Even expensive gold jewelry contains a small percentage of nickel, causing some wearers to develop itchy rashes and redness.

Designs
Tungsten is a good choice for consumers who want to personalize their ring or wear something a little more decorative. A tungsten ring can be engraved with initials or various images, such as a cross or Celtic design, with a laser engraving machine. While tungsten is naturally dark gray, it can be polished to a light gray as well as dark-plated so that it looks black.

How to Clean Tungsten Carbide Rings

Tungsten carbide rings are made from tungsten and carbide powders, resulting in an indestructible, scratch-proof metal. The metal is used to create rings, wedding bands and bracelets. Tungsten is a rare metal that, according to titanium-jewelry.com, is almost 10 times harder than 18-karat gold, five times harder than tool steel and four times harder than titanium. Tungsten carbide rings require little care, although cleaning is required to remove dirt, exposure to chemicals, soap residue and fingerprints.

1.Combine 1 cup of warm water with ? tbsp. liquid dish soap in a bowl or cup. Submerge the tungsten carbide ring in the water for five minutes.

Tungsten Carbide Ring Advantages

Gold, platinum, stainless steel, titanium and tungsten carbide are some of the most popular materials used to create wedding bands. Tungsten carbide, a synthetic material, is one of the world's hardest materials. There are many advantages that tungsten carbide rings offer over rings made out of other materials. Tungsten carbide is formed when certain levels of carbon and tungsten are combined. Tungsten carbide rings can be associated with higher price tags simply because of high production costs. Tungsten carbide must be heated to temperatures exceeding 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit to be able to form the metal into ring form.

Gold
Gold is a very popular precious metal used in the creation of rings and wedding bands. Tungsten carbide is harder than gold. While gold offers a hardness rating of "3" on the Moh's metal hardness scale, tungsten carbide offers a "9" hardness rating out of 10. Gold is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Ductility refers to a material's ability to bend under pressure. Gold will bend and warp under pressure, unlike tungsten carbide, which does not bend under pressure. Tungsten carbide rings shatter under pressure. This property might be very attractive to a consumer who is concerned with a ring holding its shape. Tungsten carbide rings are generally cheaper than gold rings.

Platinum
Many rings and wedding bands are constructed out of platinum, which is also a precious metal. While platinum is harder than silver and gold, tungsten carbide is much harder than platinum. Platinum only offers a maximum hardness rating of around "4" on the Moh's hardness scale. Platinum is also very ductile; a ring made out of platinum will bend under high pressures. Platinum rings are some of the most expensive rings on the market, they are usually much more expensive than tungsten carbide rings.

How to Buy a Tungsten Carbide Ring

Tungsten carbide has become one of the latest crazes in fashion accessories for men. This is even more true when it comes to rings made out of this particular metal. They can also be surprisingly difficult to find for a variety of reasons. This metal, heavy and harder than steel, can be as expensive as titanium, though isn't as popular.

1.Establish your budget. Tungsten carbide rings can be fairly expensive, beginning at roughly $50 without stones or engravings and heading up to several hundred dollars afterward. While that may not sound like much, the fact that that price is for unadorned bands makes it high. Tungsten carbide's low maintenance and durability, however, makes the price is worth it for some people.

2.Check local, reputable jewelry dealers. If there are tungsten carbide rings available, you should ask to make sure the metal is pure and not an amalgamation. Tungsten carbide, when combined with other metals, can react with skin oils and begin to degrade. Also see if there is a guarantee on any purchases of tungsten carbide rings and if the jeweler would offer a return after purchase in case something is unsatisfactory.

3.Check Internet dealers. The Internet is a good option for finding unique styles of tungsten carbide rings, though you should be sure to have your ring size on hand, since you won't be able to try on rings before purchase via the Internet. The same questions should be asked of an Internet retailer as a physical one: quality guarantee and return policy. For Internet dealers of tungsten carbide rings, there's often an "about us" section regarding the business. Reading that section often provides an insight into the company and will answer many of your questions as a buyer.

How to Remove a Tungsten Carbide Ring

Tungsten carbide is an extremely strong, durable metal that's become popular for the manufacture of wedding rings. However, there has been a lot of rumor and urban legend regarding the ring's actual strength. It isn't true that the only way to remove a tungsten carbide ring in case of emergency is to remove the finger. But the usual method of using a pair of metal cutters on the ring won't work. What you need is a strong grip and a pair of the proper pliers

1.Take the vise-grip pliers and carefully begin to squeeze the tungsten carbide ring. Steadily adjust the pressure on the side of the vise until you hear the ring crack.

2 Rotate the ring (or the pliers if the ring is stuck too tightly to turn) a third of the way and repeat the previous step. Continue to squeeze the ring until you hear it crack in a different place.

3.Continue cracking the tungsten carbide until it breaks entirely. The ring should shatter, leaving the finger intact.
