How to Value Gold Jewelry Accurately

If you are thinking about selling your old gold jewelry for cash you might be tempted by the many offers to mail your jewelry in and receive cash back. If you do this, however, you may not be getting the true value for the gold that you are selling. To get the spot price of gold when selling your gold jewelry, you need to first know what it is worth so that you know if you are getting a good deal.

1.Determine your gold's purity. Look for its karat weight stamped on the side of the piece or the inside of the band for rings. The number will be no larger than a 24. To determine gold purity divide the karat weight by 24 and note this number as a percentage. If the stamp on the piece is a three digit number instead of a karat weight (1 to 24), divide the three digit number by 1,000 and note this number as a percentage of gold purity.

2.The value of gold jewelry is based not only on the gold but can also be influenced by the gems that may be included in the piece. If you want an accurate reading for the gold only you will have to make sure to remove all non-gold parts such as the setting and gemstones if applicable. If you are not able or willing to remove non-gold parts then you will have to have your piece appraised by a professional or jeweler.

3.Weigh your gold with a fine scale that can measure down to the gram. Make sure your scale is calibrated properly to ensure accuracy.

4.Calculate the troy ounces of gold you are looking to find the value of. To do this multiply the grams that your gold jewelry weighs by the percentage of purity determined in step one and then divide the total by 31.103. This number is the conversion of grams per troy ounce, which gold spot prices are based on. Note your result; this is the calculation of your gold jewelry in troy ounces.

5.Determine the current spot prices of gold per ounce in your currency. You can usually find this price quite easily by visiting almost any financial news website or gold price organization.

6.Multiply the spot price by the troy ounces of gold you own as calculated in step 4. The result is the true value of your solid gold jewelry at scrap value.

How to Buy a Wedding Ring

1.Find out your partner's taste. Perhaps even choose the ring together. If secrecy is a priority, enlist a mutual friend to broach the subject.

2.Ask about heirlooms. This might be an easy and meaningful solution to this delicate problem. Check with your parents and other relatives to see if there's a band you can use.

3.Choose a wedding band that matches the engagement ring so that they can be worn at the same time or eventually fused.

4.Shop around. Ask friends and family about jewelers they've had good experiences with. Check bridal magazines and local advertisements for even more ideas.

5.Have the rings personalized. Engrave the date of your wedding, the date of your first meeting, or some other significant sentiment on the bands.

6.Find out her size, if you don't already know. You can do this by asking one of her friends or taking one of her existing rings to a jeweler to have it measured.

7.Buy it. Some traditions hold that wedding bands should cost about two months' wages, but this is flexible and simply a tradition. Ask the vender about financing if necessary, or putting the ring on layaway by putting down an initial deposit and making monthly payments.

Wedding Band Style

Today, jewelers offer many styles and designs for wedding bands aside from the traditional plain band. A classic ring may have a conservative engraving or beveling style. Contemporary bands usually appear more modern with non-traditional designs and motifs, and they may include two or more colors of metal. Hand-crafted bands are more traditional and artistic and often have a woven appearance. Some bands include diamonds or other gemstones either embedded into the band itself or above the band in a setting. You may also choose to have your ring engraved with a significant pattern (like a Celtic design) or message.

Wedding Band Finished Method

If you choose a plain band, you can customize the sheen of the metal to your liking. A matte finish gives a sanded, low-sheen appearance. For a medium sheen, go with a satin finish. A shiny finish will, as the name suggests, give your ring a high-lustre, shiny appearance.

More unique and modern finishes include sandstone, which gives the ring a sandy appearance, or hammered, which results in a multifaceted, scaly effect.

Profile
Rings have different shapes or profiles which make them fit differently. First is a flat profile, or flat with softened edges. This means the cross section of the ring is rectangular in shape. There are also D-shaped profiles (the outside is slightly curved while the inside lies flat) and courting profiles (the outside curves around the finger while the inside curves against the finger). A halo-shaped ring is true to its name and is cylindrical all the way around like a halo.

Wedding Band Metals

The wedding band is the symbol of eternal love between spouses. Some people select a band based on functionality, considering the metal type and fit above all else. Others care more about the style of the ring -- how it looks and what special meaning the design might hold. No matter what's important to you, there are several details to consider when selecting the type of ring that will represent your commitment and love.

There are several metal alloys to choose from for a wedding band. Gold -- both white- and yellow-colored -- is very common, though it is soft and scratches easily.

Titanium and tungsten are the most durable metals. They appear more rugged and industrial and are a popular modern choice for men's bands. Though the two metals look similarly, they have different weights; tungsten is very heavy while titanium is rather lightweight.

Platinum and palladium are more durable than gold, but not quite as durable as tungsten or titanium. They are very shiny and are also the most expensive metals used in jewelry.

How to Tell If Gold Chain Is Plated?

1.Look for the letters G.P. or G.E.P. embossed somewhere on the chain. These letters stand for "Gold Plated" and "Gold Electroplated," respectively. According to Antoinette L. Matlins in the book "Jewelry and Gems: A Buying Guide," by law, a legitimate gold jewelry manufacturer must indicate whether the jewelry is gold-plated somewhere near the manufacturer's trademark.

2.Observe any skin discoloration that you may experience. Gold that has been mixed with large amounts of nickel or that is plated over nickel can eventually cause the skin to become discolored because many people are allergic to nickel and other metals. Pure gold is hypoallergenic and does not cause this reaction.

3.Observe any change in the color or brightness of the chain over time. Gold is heavier than most metals and over time, the gold plating of a piece of jewelry does not "wear off," as is commonly thought, but instead recedes into the jewelry as other metals rise to the top.

4.Hold a magnet up to the gold chain. Observe the reaction of the chain to the magnet. If the chain is attracted by the metal, then it is most likely gold-plated. Pure gold is not magnetic.

5.Have your chain professionally tested. This will require some expense, but it is the surest way to know if you have high quality gold. Take the chain to a jeweler and ask to have it tested and examined. The jeweler can perform numerous tests, including weighing, plate testing and nitric acid assay (the most accurate test.

How to Buy Hypoallergenic Wedding Rings and Measure Ring Size

If you have contact allergies to gold or silver, choose a wedding ring made of a hypoallergenic metal. A hypoallergenic wedding band won't cause itching or a rash against your skin because it isn't mixed with the base metals, such as nickel, often alloyed with gold or silver. The cost of these rings ranges from surprisingly inexpensive to exorbitant, depending on the material used.

1.Buy either titanium, tungsten carbide or platinum wedding rings from a local jeweler or on the Internet. These metals are considered hypoallergenic. Titanium wedding bands may have aluminum added if they are aircraft grade; aluminum rarely causes contact dermatitis. Tungsten rings without the word "carbide" may not be hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic platinum rings typically are 95 percent platinum and 5 percent other metals, including ruthenium, iridium or palladium.

2.Measure your ring size if you plan on ordering your hypoallergenic wedding ring online. Ask a jeweler to measure your finger or use a complimentary ring sizer or chart online. Some Internet jewelers offer printable ring size charts.

To measure your finger, wrap a small strip of paper cut to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick around the base of your ring finger. With a pen, mark where the end overlaps. Unwrap the paper. Measure the strip to the mark with the ruler. Convert to millimeters (mm) if the ruler doesn't have metric units. Refer to a chart listing ring sizes.

3.Choose the style and the width of the wedding band you want. Because of the relatively low cost of the hypoallergenic titanium and tungsten carbide rings, these wedding rings can be wider and still inexpensive. In some cases, no cost difference exists. Nonallergenic platinum usually tops $1,000.

4.Check the store terms if you order wedding bands online. Some stores will resize up to 1/4 size larger if the size isn't exact. Some will offer returns no engraving is requested. Some stores will offer to polish your titanium rings for free.

5.Check the descriptions of the metals used. Ensure the alloys used in the rings you buy are hypoallergenic. Tungsten carbide and the titanium metals usually follow the standards set for rings that don't cause allergies.

Gold Plating Jewelry

Not all gold jewelry is created equal. Some jewelry may appear to be gold when in fact it is another metal covered (plated) in gold. Why? Because gold plate has less gold, is therefore less expensive to produce and in general gives a close second to the real thing. The plating process places a thin layer of real gold on top of another metal. Gold is usually plated on silver or copper. This is accomplished through electromagnetic or chemical means. The underlying layer of metal bonds so well with the gold that it begins to diffuse into the layer of gold, eventually fading the gold. Most electroplating using silver and copper requires an intermediate metal or alloy placed between the two to prevent this.

Titanium Ring and Tungsten Carbide Ring

Titanium is one of the toughest, hardest and most durable metals. Titanium is even a little harder than stainless steel ("6" hardness rating) but it is not harder than tungsten carbide. Just like with silver, gold, platinum and stainless steel, titanium is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Stainless steel rings are around 43 percent heavier than titanium rings, which mean tungsten carbide rings are considerably heavier than titanium rings. Basic titanium rings are linked with price tags that are similar to tungsten carbide ring price tags.

Stainless Steel Ring and Tungsten Carbide Ring

Many rings are made from durable stainless steel. Stainless steel is one of the harder metals available but it is still not harder than tungsten carbide. Stainless steel offers a hardness value of "6" on the Moh's scale of hardness. Stainless steel is also more ductile than tungsten carbide. It might take quite a bit of pressure, but a stainless steel ring will still bend rather than shatter. Tungsten carbide rings are about 90 percent heavier than stainless steel rings. This might make it a more attractive choice for consumers in the market for a heavier ring. Stainless steel rings are usually relatively cheap, tungsten carbide rings are generally more expensive than stainless steel rings.
