Emergency Removal of Tungsten Rings

Materials, like tungsten carbide or ceramic, can only be removed by cracking them into pieces with standard vice grip style locking pliers. Standard ring cutters will not work.

Place vice grip style locking pliers over ring and adjust the jaws to clamp lightly. Release and adjust tightener one-third turn and then clamp again. Repeat until a crack is heard, and then continue clamping in different positions until the hard material breaks away. Take care not to slide or rotate the cracked ring on the finger. If the ring contains an inlay of gold, the exposed gold can then be cut or clipped in the usual fashion.

Should We be Concerned with Cobalt inTungsten Ring?

Absolutely YES! Many Tungsten and tungsten carbide rings have Cobalt in them. The alloy containing Cobalt is easier to procure and tungsten rings containing Cobalt are being commonly sold. However, tungsten rings containing Cobalt will develop a negative reaction to your skin. After a short time period the ring will develop oxidation spots that cannot be removed or polished out. This is due to the Cobalt reacting to the human body. You can easily prevent this from happening by purchasing one of our Cobalt free tungsten carbide rings.

Tungsten Bracelet

When choosing a bracelet made of tungsten, it is important to recognize that it will not need polishing, a necessity for those bracelets made of the more commonly found gold or silver metals. These incredibly tough bracelets come in a large variety of styles. Brushed tungsten is a quite popular choice and is often the choice for active-wear pieces. Those tungsten bracelets crafted with a smooth finish reflect light brilliantly and often are considered a dressier piece.

One popular style found in both men's and women's bracelets is a woven or modular design. Though the metal is a heavy one in its appearance, it still proves to be a popular choice by both sexes. These bracelets, with their distinctive designs and patterns, come in a variety of widths and weights.

Tungsten bracelets are designed with a unisex approach to their appearance. Both men and women may choose the same bracelet and find that it looks equally fitting on their wrist or arm. These bracelets are often offered with a sizing option so that the bracelet can be tailored to fit the arm of a man or a woman. The type of tungsten bracelet chosen is dependent purely on a matter of personal choice. The bracelet may prove to be an everlasting part of a person's jewelery, as it is known for its permanence, as these bracelets are crafted from one of the most durable substances known.

How do I Choose A Bracelet

The tungsten bracelet is a bracelet that comes in various shapes and sizes and is made of tungsten, which is a steel gray metal. This type of bracelet can be found in styles fit for both men and women alike. Choosing a tungsten bracelet is largely dependent on personal choice and also when and where the bracelet will be most frequently worn. If the tungsten bracelet is to be worn as a glamor piece, a lighter look would be chosen, while a heavier woven piece would prove to be a better choice for a bracelet that will be worn as a casual accessory.

As a fashion accessory, one of the attributes that makes the tungsten bracelet so popular is that it is crafted from scratch-proof metal. It is also a hypo-allergenic substance, which makes it popular with those who have metal allergies, especially those with an intolerance to zinc. Its density is similar to that of gold or silver, so it lends itself to a high level of comfort for the person wearing it.

Titanium Ring Vs Tungsten Ring

Price – Titanium and tungsten carbide are both very affordable alternatives to pricy precious metals and are fairly comparable in price. For both materials prices can vary based on style, manufacturer and quality of the material.

Composition – Titanium is a metal that is slightly alloyed with other elements for use in jewelry, usually aluminum and vanadium (depending on the grade). The most commonly used grades for titanium jewelry (aircraft, extra-hard and commercial pure) are at least 85% pure titanium. Tungsten carbide is a compound made from the rare metal tungsten and an equal number of carbon atoms.

Hardness - Both titanium and tungsten carbide are considerably harder than precious metals like gold and platinum. However, tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials in existence and substantially harder than titanium, registering a 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness (compared to titanium’s score of 6).

Scratch-resistance – Due to its hardness tungsten carbide handily beats titanium when it comes to scratch-resistance, though titanium is still considerably more scratch-resistant than other popular materials. There are virtually no materials other than a diamond that can scratch tungsten carbide.

Crack-resistance – Titanium is much more crack-resistant than naturally brittle tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide’s extreme hardness paired with its brittleness means that tungsten carbide rings can crack or shatter if struck against a hard enough surface. While some higher grade tungsten carbide bands demonstrate decreased brittleness, as a general rule titanium rings are still a better fit for men who work a lot with their hands.

Weight – Titanium and tungsten carbide rings are practically at opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to how they feel on the finger. Despite their durability, titanium rings are extremely lightweight, and are perfect for the more jewelry-phobic. On the other hand, tungsten carbide rings are quite dense and heavy, and have a pleasantly weighty feel on the finger.

Color – Both titanium and tungsten rings have a handsome natural gunmetal grey color, and can also be seen in popular black versions. White tungsten is also an option for tungsten carbide rings, which offers a more “classic” appearance that resembles white gold or platinum.

Hypoallergenic properties – Most titanium rings are hypoallergenic and appropriate for those with skin allergies, while most tungsten carbide rings are not. This is generally because many tungsten carbide rings employ the element cobalt, which can be an allergen for some skin types.

Emergency removal – A common myth for both titanium and tungsten carbide rings is that they cannot be removed in case of emergency. Both types of rings can certainly be removed in emergency situations, though the methodology for removal will vary – titanium rings will need to be cut through using something like a jeweler’s saw, while tungsten carbide rings will have to be cracked using vice grip pliers.

Resizing – Because of their strength, as a general rule neither titanium nor tungsten carbide rings can be resized. However, both materials are inexpensive enough that simply replacing them is a viable option.

Tungsten and Titanium Comparison

Titanium and tungsten carbide (also sometimes just referred to as tungsten) are two of the most popular contemporary materials currently available on the men’s jewelry market. While surface appearances may lead some shoppers to believe that they are similar in nature, in reality the two materials are quite different. Here are some of the key points to consider when choosing between titanium and tungsten rings.

Tungsten Engagement Rings

Tungsten engagement rings with stone inlays also have become popular. These rings provide the buyer with the opportunity to add precious and semiprecious stones such as diamonds, emeralds and rubies to their tungsten band. The number of stones that can be inlaid into a tungsten band is up to the purchaser. Adding numerous stones will make the ring heavier, and tungsten is already a heavy metal. The benefit of stone inlays, however, is that they allow the ring to maintain the traditional engagement ring feel without sacrificing the added hypoallergenic and durability benefits of tungsten.

There also are various color and polish options available for tungsten engagement rings. The tungsten alloy can be manipulated, so rings can range in color from dark black to light silver, depending on preference. Tungsten also is one of the few metals that provide constant shine, and options that focus on preserving shine are available at most jewelers.

The popularity of tungsten engagement rings has risen as the benefits of the tungsten alloy have become more publicized. These benefits, which are a result of the tungsten alloy being a hypoallergenic metal and a scratch-proof metal, include increased durability of the jewelry, and they make the rings suitable for sensitive skin. Tungsten is a high-density metal that is difficult to shape, however, so t there are limited choices available for people who want tungsten engagement rings but also want rings that are unique.

Different Engagement Ring

Although tungsten is more commonly used for male wedding rings, women have become increasingly interested in tungsten engagement rings, the options have increased. The three most common types of tungsten engagement rings are plain tungsten bands, tungsten bands with metal inlays and tungsten bands with stone and gem inlays.

Plain tungsten engagement rings are the most commonly purchased and can have a variety of designs. The design options for plain tungsten bands include grooves, bevels and engraved designs. Edges also can be rounded, squared or ridged, depending on preference. These options make the plain band more unique by adding patterns and accents. Plain tungsten engagement rings also are the most affordable tungsten option and are often more durable than rings inset with metals and stones.

Another common type of tungsten engagement ring has an inlay, or center band, that is a different metal. Platinum, silver or gold are often used for the inlay. Tungsten engagement rings that are inlaid with other metals create a vibrant contrast of color and are a unique alternative to the plain band.

Why Jewelry Stores Do Not Carry Many Tungsten Ring Styles

When you may have read that tungsten rings are increasingly becoming the ring of choice for wedding bands, it is not simply a truth tungsten ring retailers are trying to pass off. Nowadays, nearly half of all wedding bands sold in the United States are now made of tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide’s immense popularity stems from not only its durability, but also its affordability.

Despite tungsten carbide’s increasing popularity, you may be on a fruitless mission if you’re looking for the perfect tungsten wedding band at your local jewelry store. Unfortunately, the selection at your local jeweler will be skimpy if there is a selection at all. Why is this, you may be wondering? Well, the main reason is that jewelry stores do not really want you to buy tungsten carbide rings.

Jewelers may give a plethora of other reasons as to why their tungsten carbide selection is not very large. They say things such as tungsten carbide “is not really jewelry” or that there “nothing precious about tungsten”. Well, tungsten carbide is most definitely jewelry; otherwise they would not have any in their store. And yes, tungsten is not a precious metal like gold or silver, but that does not take away from the fact that is very lustrous looking choice for a wedding band.

The real reason that jewelers do not carry a lot of tungsten carbide options is simply that tungsten wedding bands are less expensive. Platinum or a gold wedding band will sell for significantly more than a tungsten carbide ring – that is a fact. Because the mark up generally will not be as high on tungsten carbide ring compared to a gold or platinum ring, the profit margin will be less for the jeweler. Jewelers need to mark up their prices in order to make a profit, just like any other business and any other product. A tungsten ring that retails for $250 will not yield as much profit as, say a platinum ring that retails for $2500. For example, a car dealer will make a larger profit selling you an Aston Martin than the dealer would make selling you a SmartCar.

Some jewelers will carry a few selections of tungsten carbide jewelry, in case they cannot convince you to buy gold or silver or other precious metal options. If you are after tungsten, searching a tungsten carbide retailer is your best option, as you may not find the selection or style you are looking for at your local jeweler.

Engraving–The Perfect Method to Personalize Your Ring

You found the ring you want, and decided to go with tungsten carbide because of its durability and stylish look. Also, its affordability did not, by any means, dissuade you from your decision. But, in doing your research, you undoubtedly discovered that your prospective new tungsten wedding bands are extremely hard. Good news, tungsten carbide’s hardness does not mean that you cannot engrave your ring.

Through the technology of laser engraving (or even through more traditional methods), tungsten rings can be engraved. Now, the only decision you face is what font you want your engraving in. This may sound like we are pulling your leg as most people who are not too aware of engraving do not know that you can venture outside the regular block print your parents may have etched into their rings.

Most couples have no idea that you can engrave in a font that is anything other than a traditional block print, like the font found in this article. However, technology has come a long way, not only in the sense that so much information is available to you virtually at the speed in which you can type your inquiry into Google. In terms of the jewelry industry, engraving machines have come leaps and bounds thanks to the general technological improvements. Now, they offer an array of fonts to choose from.

Asides from choosing regular print font, there are cursive fonts, you can choose calligraphy fonts, or even non-Roman alphabet fonts, such as Arabic or even Hebrew. In reality, laser engravers can print just about any font out there. Basically, if you see it on Microsoft word as a font option, you can have that as your font of choice in your engraving. Really love French Script, but are a little concerned because you haven’t seen it on an engraving before? Not to worry, it can be done with laser engraving.

Traditional engravings, unfortunately do not offer as wide variety of option in engraving. However, thanks to technological advancement you are not confined to engraving through traditional engraving methods. You can use any font you wish to your heart’s content to display your heart’s intent in your engraving.
