A dart board is set up like a pie grid, featuring 20 evenly spaced slots. The center of the board has a bull's-eye, and the other sections are split into four spaces --- two large and two thin areas. The board setup and numbers allow dozens of dart game variations. These games are about adding up and eliminating numbers, and having the best dart-throwing accuracy.

Each player gets three dart throws per round. After five rounds, the player with the highest score wins. The outer rings of each numbered section is worth double the points. The inner ring is worth triple the points. For example, if you got the outer ring on the "20" spot, you would get 40 points. The outer ring of the bull's-eye is worth 25 points, and the bull's-eye is worth 50 points. There is no limit to how many points a player may get.

301, 501 and 701 are subtraction games where players have to throw darts and eliminate points as quickly as possible. Scoring is the same as "Add 'Em Up," with the scores subtracted instead of added. Players must reach exactly 0 to win the game. For example, if a player has four points left and the dart lands on a seven, the throw just counts as zero points; however, if the same player's dart lands on a four, the throw counts as four points, which brings the player's score to zero, resulting in a victory. Each player gets three throws per round, and there is no limit on rounds.

The Rules of How to Play Darts

Technological advancements have made game playing easier. For instance, when playing darts with a soft-tip board, the board electronically keeps score and counts bounce-outs, whereas traditional steel-tip boards do not. However, you should experience darts the old fashioned way, and you should pick up the game with relative ease by checking out the following important rules.

Darts Basics

If the steel-tip board is not set up, hang it exactly 68 inches from the ground. When throwing, stand 7 feet, 9 1/4 inches from the board's face; establish the toe line at the front of the oche, which should measure 1.5 inches tall and 2 feet in length. The board has 20 sections randomly numbered 1 to 20, with "20" centered at the top, and the red 25 ring surrounds the bull's-eye.

Before starting your one-on-one or team game, each player gets nine warm-up throws. Have one player from each team throw a dart; whichever team gets closest to the bull's-eye goes first. Keep score by hand on score sheets or a scoreboard.

Throw three darts during your turn and remove them from the board after scoring. If your foot crosses over the toe line or if you trip over the oche and release your dart, you get no points and lose that throw.

Darts Scoring

To score, your dart must stay on the board for at least five seconds. If your dart sticks to another dart, falls off the board or bounces off the "spider" (the dividing wires that resemble a spider's web), it does not count.

If your dart lands in the wedge, you receive the points shown on the outer ring; if it lands in the outer, narrow double ring, you receive twice the amount shown. If your dart lands on the inner, narrow triple ring, you receive three times the amount shown; if your dart hits the outer bull's-eye, you receive 25 points; and if it hits the inner double bull's-eye, you receive 50 points.

How to play darts

If you're competitive, think about mastering this game in the family room den before braving the scene at the local watering hole. Here's how to play darts instructions

Instructions

1.Hang the dartboard so that the center is 5 feet 8 inches from the floor. alt

2.Mark the throwing line, called the 'oche' (rhymes with 'hockey'), with nonskid tape. The line should be 7 feet, 9 1 /4 inches from the face of the dartboard (not the wall), according to the World Darts Federation.

3.Make sure the tape mark lies so that the front edge is the actual line. In other words, a player may step on the tape, but not past it.

4.Give each player or team three darts, and determine who throws first by having each player or team representative throw one dart. The player or team whose dart is closest to the center, or bull's-eye, gets to go first.

5.Warm up, as competitive dart players do, by alternating throws until each person has thrown nine darts.

6.Once the game begins, take your turn by throwing your three darts.

7.Add up the score. Each part of the board has a number, and that is the dart's score.

8.Count a dart that misses the board completely as a throw. The score for that dart is zero.

9.Remove your darts and allow the other player to throw.

10.Alternate until the game is over. There are numerous dart games, including the simple one in which players throw five sets, and whoever has the highest score wins.

World Grand Prix Darts: Phil Taylor to start first night in Dublin

Ten-time winner Phil Taylor will star on the opening night of the partypoker.com World Grand Prix on Monday October 7, with defending champion Michael van Gerwen starts his defence the day after in Dublin.

The £350,000 event will be held at Dublin's Citywest Hotel from October 7-13, with 32 stars competing for the £100,000 title live on Sky Sports HD.

With the first round split across the opening two nights, World Champion Taylor will headline the eight games on Monday October 7 as he takes on Jamie Caven in their best-of-three set contest.

Grand Prix of Darts - coming soon!

Two-time champion James Wade, the 2007 and 2010 World Grand Prix winner, will play Steve Beaton, who won last weekend's German Darts Masters in Sindelfingen, while 2005 Citywest champion Colin Lloyd is up against Ronnie Baxter in the tournament's opening game.

Wes Newton, a semi-finalist last year, plays Peter Wright and Robert Thornton - who knocked out Taylor on his way to the quarter-finals - meets Paul Nicholson.

Simon Whitlock faces Northern Irish ace Michael Mansell, while Gary Anderson plays Jelle Klaasen before the opening night concludes as Irish qualifier Connie Finnan takes on two-time finalist Terry Jenkins.

DARTS: Round-up with Steve Chapman

A TOTAL of 64 players will battle it out on the oche on Sunday but one marksman missing will be reigning champion Simon Stevenson.

His quest to win the tourney for a fourth time ended at the first hurdle when he was beaten by 2012 runner-up Robbie Bisgrove in the preliminary round.

This stage of the competition will be played at four venues and all ties will be the best of five legs of 501, flying start, and the bust rule will apply throughout the competition.

The first match in all venues will commence at 8pm.

The winners from this round will go forward to the last 32 which will be contested on Sunday, October 20.

PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT FRIDAY LEAGUE

MARITIME Social Club returned to winning ways following their shock defeat the previous week and defeated Waterloo A 11-2 to top the table by 14 points.

Second placed Ker Street Social Club had to keep their nerve when hosting Steam Packet B as the visitors came from 6-3 down to level at 6-6, before Robbie Bisgrove acquired the 13th and decisive point.

City Social overcame Friary Vaults 9-4 and were buoyed by an excellent showing from Phil Hoskins, who recorded no fewer than three maximum 180s.

Antony Hayman threw the week's top game in 35, inspiring Porters A to a 9-4 success at Indian Inn B.

Weston Mill Oak Villa consolidated third spot with a 10-3 victory at St Levan Inn. Chris Lancaster threw the week's top checkout with a mark of 128, while also on target with ton-plus checkouts were Mark Shears (114), Steve Tremblett (105) and Nathan Beeney (104).

Indian A secured all but one of the 13 points that were on offer at Porters B, being deprived of maximum points by Lee Soper.

Dart Scoring

The standard dartboard is divided into 20 numbered sections, scoring from 1 to 20 points, by wires running from the small central circle to the outer circular wire. Circular wires within the outer wire subdivide each section into single, double and triple areas. The dartboard featured on the "Indoor League" television show of the 1970s did not feature a triple section, and according to host Fred Trueman during the first episode, this is the traditional Yorkshire board.

Various games can be played (and still are played informally) using the standard dartboard. However, in the official game, any dart landing inside the outer wire scores as follows:

Hitting one of the large portions of each of the numbered sections, traditionally alternately coloured black and white, scores the points value of that section.

Hitting the thin inner portions of these sections, roughly halfway between the outer wire and the central circle coloured red or green, scores triple the points value of that section.

Hitting the thin outer portions of these sections, again coloured red or green, scores double the points value of that section. The double-20 is often referred to as double-top, reflecting the 20's position on the dartboard.

The central circle is divided into a green outer ring worth 25 points (known as "outer", "outer bull", or "iris") and a red or black inner circle (usually known as "bull", "inner bull" or "double bull"), worth 50 points. The term "bullseye" can mean either the whole central part of the board or just the inner red/black section. The term "bull's ring" usually means just the green outer ring. The inner bull counts as a double when doubling in or out.

Hitting outside the outer wire scores nothing.

Any dart that does not remain in the board until it is collected by the player (for example, a dart that hits a wire and bounces out of the board or drops out with the impact of a later throw) also scores nothing; exception should be noted if play is on any electronic board: darts falling out are counted.

A dart only scores if its point is embedded in or is touching the playing surface. A dart that hits the board side on or at an angle but does not fall off because it is held in place by two other darts, for example, will score either equal to where its point touches or not at all.

The highest score possible with three darts is 180, commonly known as a "ton 80" (100 points is called a ton), obtained when all three darts land in the triple 20. In the televised game, the referee frequently announces a score of 180 in exuberant style. A "quad" ring appeared briefly between the triple ring and the bull in the 1990s, leading to a potential 240 maximum (three quad-20s), a 210 maximum checkout (Q20-Q20-Bull) and seven dart finishes from a 501 start (five quad-20s, triple-17, bullseye), but was swiftly dropped from professional tournament play.

Dartboard History

The dartboard may have its origins in the cross-section of a tree. An old name for a dartboard is "butt"; the word comes from the French word but, meaning "target". In particular, the Yorkshire and Manchester Log End boards differ from the standard board in that they have no treble, only double and bullseye, the Manchester board being of a smaller diameter, with a playing area of only 25 cm across with double and bull areas measuring just 4mm. The London Fives board is another variation. This has only 12 equal segments numbered 20, 5, 15, 10, 20, 5, 15, 10, 20, 5, 15, 10 with the doubles and triples being a quarter of an inch wide.

There is a speculation that the game originated among soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of the cask or at the bottom of trunks of trees. As the wood dried, cracks would develop, creating "sections". Soon, regional standards emerged and many woodworkers supplemented bar tabs by fabricating dart boards for the local pubs.

The standard numbering plan with a 20 on top was created in 1896 by Lancashire carpenter Brian Gamlin. However, a great many other configurations have been used throughout the years and in different geographical locations. Gamlin's layout was devised to penalise inaccuracy. Although this applies to most of the board, the left-hand side (near the 14 section) is preferred by beginners, for its concentration of larger numbers. Mathematically, removing the rotational symmetry by placing the "20" at the top, there are 19!, or 121,645,100,408,832,000 possible dartboards. Many different layouts would penalise a player more than the current setup; however, the current setup actually does the job rather efficiently. There have been several mathematical papers published that consider the "optimal" dartboard.

Dartboard Height and Distance

In the standard game, the dartboard is hung so that the bullseye is 5 feet 8 inches (172.72 cm) from the floor, eye-level for a 6-foot (180 cm) person. The oche —the line behind which the throwing player must stand—is generally 7 feet 9 1.4 inches (236.86 cm) from the face of the dartboard measured horizontally. Another recognised way of dartboard / oche dimensions is as thus... set up the dartboard on a solid wall so that the distance from the floor to the centre of the bullseye (in the centre of the dartboard) is 68 inches (172.72 cm), then measuring again from the centre of the bullseye in a diagonal manner, measure 115.41 inches (293.14 cm) from the bullseye to the rear of the oche and this will ensure true and accurate allround dimensions, provided the floor is horizontal and the walls are plumb.

An alternate means of measuring the distance from the bullseye to the far side of the oche or throwing line. It is 93.249 inches (236.85 cm) from the rear of the oche to a plumb line hanging (right angle) from the bulls eye. This figure is calculated using Pythagorean theorem, a² + b² = c². This is the recognized world standard as set by the World Darts Federation and is used in most areas.

The London 5 board or narrow 5s board set up is slightly different from the standard board. The height is set at 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m) to the centre of the bull and the oche is at 9 feet (2.74 m) from the face of the board.

Phil Taylor Won Sydney Darts Masters

He came to Australia to get the job done!

And Phil Taylor reigned supreme as he won the inaugural Sydney Darts Masters - thrashing Michael van Gerwen 10-3.

He was ruthless. He was dominant. He was brilliant and he sent out a huge message to the world of darts!

His average in the final was 109.46 and he finished with a tournament average of 107.28

The event was a huge success and there maybe two World Series of Darts events in Australia next year.

But the Sydney Masters belonged to the Unicorn man.

Taylor had beaten hometown favourite Simon Whitlock in the semi-finals before he ripped into Van Gerwen in a surprisingly one sided final.

Taylor raced into 4-0 lead although Van Gerwen had a dart to win each leg! He missed the bull for a 170, then D16, 'tops' and D10....he certainly wasn't at his fluent best.

But Taylor was running hot. The Dutchman managed to pull two legs back but after he missed three more doubles to make it 4-3, it was game over.

Taylor hit three 180s, a 177, a 105 finish as he won five straight legs to put one hand in the trophy....in the 10th leg the Unicorn ace hit six perfect darts! A 9 darter was the only thing missing from a terrific three days in Sydney!

Van Gerwen managed a third leg - mere consolation - before Taylor stamped his class all over the final as he won it in style with a 134 check-out!

It was another huge success after the first event in Dubai and this World Series is set to grow and grow with more events bring planned all around the world.

Phil Taylor may just have celebrated his 53rd birthday but he has probed in Australia that he is still the man to beat.

Bo’ness darts tournament raised £500

A darts tournament in memory of young Bo’ness man raised almost £500 for charity.

The tournament on August 26, saw 48 players from the Bo’ness and Falkirk area take part with the eventual winner being local pro darts player Allan Norris.

Dad David, who plays darts for the Crown Inn in the Falkirk darts league and also plays for East Stirling Counties, organised the event at the Bo’ness pub, which has four dart boards.

David said: “We wanted to organise something to mark our son’s passing.

He was just 22 and was a groundsman at Falkirk FC’s stadium with so much to look forward to.

The club was really good to us as they gave a signed strip and offered tickets to a match for the auction.

Allan Norris was able to come along on the night and although he won the tournament, he donated the cash prize back to our nominated charity — Self-Awareness.

In the end we raised £472 for the charity and we’d like to thank everyone who took part and our sponsors.”
