DIMPLEX, RIBTEX, and other similar styles are actually hard flights which have been embossed with a texture. The bumpy or ribbed surface tends to stiffen the flight, which some darters consider desirable. The extra surface area also adds a small amount of drag to the flight, which makes the dart slightly more stable in some cases. The various embossed types of flights are generally a little harder to insert into a metal shaft, due to increased thickness. Use a dart tool or knife blade to gently spread open the slots at the back of the shaft.

--- All types of flights tend to split at the back center, where the folds meet and are hit by dart points. FLIGHT PROTECTORS are small metal or plastic devices that fit over and protect this area. What is Dart Flight?

Dart flights are the fins or wings found at the back of a dart. They serve to stabilize the dart during flight and are made of various materials.

Hard dart flight is made of a stiff polyester plastic that holds shape well. The layers are permanently sealed together by heat during manufacture. Because the plastic is harder, they don't tear as easily as Soft Flights. However if they do tear, they cannot be resealed and are ruined. Hard Flights do not flex like a soft flight when hit, but do "pop off" the shaft when hitting another dart. This is desirable as it reduces deflection and allows tight groups. Hard Flights were originally made of a clear plastic, which resulted in fairly dull colors in printed designs. During the last few years, Melinex, a type of opaque plastic, has been used for printing hundreds of brighter designs. Also known as "Poly Flights"

NYLON FLIGHTS, made of ripstop nylon fabric, ar by far the most durable type of flight. These dart flights are are very hard to tear. The stiffness varies according to the weight and type of fabric used by the manufacturer, but is roughly midway between Soft and Hard flights. The most common point of wear with this flight is at the front, where it is inserted into the shaft. Since ripstop nylon fabric is a thicker material, it is important to pry open the slots on the shaft for a properly loose fit to avoid damage to the flight. Nylon Flights are available in solid colors and dozens of printed designs.

Before the first world war, pubs in the United Kingdom had dart boards made from solid blocks of wood, usually elm. They had to be soaked overnight to heal the holes made from the darts, and it was a messy business for the publican, although darts is a popular game. This changed when a company called Nodor, whose primary business was making modeling clay (which has no odor, hence the name Nodor) made a dart board. Their model of dart board wasn't a great success until someone came up with an idea to make a dart board from sisal fibres.

Small bundles of sisal fibres of all the same length were bundled together. The bundles were then compressed into a disk and bound with a metal ring. It was an instant hit as the darts made little or no damage to the board as they just parted the fibres when they entered the board; this type of dart board was more durable and required little maintenance. Modern dart boards are made of sisal fibers; low quality dart boards are sometimes made of coiled paper. However, there are several types of sisal fibre that are used in dartboards today, originating from East Africa, Brazil and China.

A regulation board is 17¾ inches [2] in diameter and is divided into 20 sections. Each section is separated with metal wire or a thin band of sheet metal. The best dart boards have the thinnest wire separating sections so that the darts have less chance of hitting these wires and bouncing out. The numbers indicating the various scoring sections of the board are normally made of wire, especially on tournament-quality boards, but may be printed directly on the board instead.

Let’s discuss about the differences of soft tip darts and steel tip darts in the weight, point and cost.

1. Weight

Steel tip darts can weigh up to 50 grams, though you will have a very difficult time to locate many varieties above 30 grams. Most people throw darts that weigh between 20-25 grams.

Soft tip darts are different; you will need to check with your local leagues for the weight requirements. At the time of this posting, 16 grams darts seem to be a safe bet no matter where you are throwing. You can get a heavier soft-tip dart, but some leagues and tournaments may ban them due to the construction or restraints of the machines that are being used. An opponent can challenge the weight of your dart if they feel it is too heavy.


2.Points

Steel tip: You have two options, fixed-point or moveable-point.

Fixed-point: This is where the point is solidly fixed into the dart, it does not move. This is the most common type of dart you will see.

Moveable-point: Guess what, these point's move! There are a number of different varieties on the market, but the theme behind them all is the same, "Help decrease the chance for a bounce-out". When you throw the dart, you want the point to be fully extended. The hope is that if you hit a wire, the back-end (or barrel) will then move forward and force the point into the boards as opposed to letting the dart bounce off the wire and fall to the floor.

3.Price

One of the biggest misconceptions amongst new throwers is that if the dart costs a lot, they are more accurate. This isn't like a car, the more bang for the buck! You can pick up a set of 18-gram brass darts for around $10 and throw them as well, if not better, than a set of $140 tungsten darts. Prices are based on a number of items like: the material of the dart, moveable-points, special paint jobs and etc. Also, you will notice that the same set of darts in some catalogues may have two different prices attached to them depending on the case you want them sent in.

Nickel silver darts is yet another soft tip dart which consists of nickel, copper and zinc. Like brass, they are around the same price range and are generally higher in quality. What's more, soft tip darts are suitable to play at home and they can be a good choice for the occasional dart players.
