Tungsten carbide buttons are widely applied in geological prospecting, coal mining and oil well boring. Because of its wear resistance and hardness, tungsten carbide button is ideally suited for wear parts, other machine parts and dies which are subject to severe service conditions, such as high temperatures, corrosion and abrasion. In recent years, tungsten carbide button has emerged as a superior alternative to steel in many industrial applications.
Most of this tungsten carbide wear parts and the mining tools are made of straight WC-Co hard metals without any addition of other carbides. Fine and ultra fine grained tungsten carbide rod buttons have become more and more important today in the field of wear parts, cutting tools for cast iron, non ferrous alloys and wood.

Tungsten Carbide Button Diamond Enhanced

In order to increase the life of the bit, to increase the rate of penetration and to decrease drilling cost, a new type of tungsten carbide diamond-enhanced composite button with high abrasive resistance and high toughness against impact, which may be used in percussion drilling, has been developed. The key problems in making the button are to improve the thermal stability of the diamond, increase the welding strength between the diamond and the cemented tungsten carbide, and reduce the sintering temperature of the tungsten carbide. All these problems have been solved effectively by pretreatment of the diamond, low temperature activation hot-press sintering.
The properties of the button have been determined under laboratory conditions. The test results show that its hardness is more than 86 HRA, its abrasiveness resistance is 100 times more than that of conventional cemented tungsten carbide. All these data theoretically that show the diamond enhanced tungsten carbide button has very good mechanical properties that can meet the needs of percussion drilling, and can solve the problems encountered with button bits of conventional cemented tungsten carbide.

The tungsten micro multileaf collimator (mMLC), is unique in having four sets of leaves, instead of the conventional two. Tungsten micro multileaf collimator has cross-leaves with 96 tungsten alloy leaves in 4 banks.
The advantages of 4-bank tungsten multileaf collimator:
Fast tracking: for parallel tungsten alloy leaves, aperture motion is determined by the time required to cover/uncover target edges parallel to leaf motion and by leaf speed. Since there aren't any such target edges for cross leaf - aperture formation, time is consequently several times faster than that of a parallel tungsten leaf collimator. In addition, cross tungsten alloy leaves smaller weight and lower friction enable higher leaf speed and reliability then conventional mMLCs.
Improved conformity: Cross tungsten leaf conforms better to complicated targets (e.g., doubly concave) and eliminates collimator rotation. Conformity is significantly improved even for a regular shape.
