Carbon Distribution of Tungsten Carbide Powder

Tungsten carbide powder is the most important raw material for cemented carbide production, carbonized by tungsten powder and carbon black with an appropriate proportion by carbon distribution calculation. The carbon distribution strongly affected the properties of tungsten carbide powder.

Tungsten atom and carbon atom can synthesize two kinds of compounds, WC and W2C.The former’s Molecular is the main and right ingredient of tungsten carbide powder, which carbon element mass accounted for 6.12%, the principle of carbon distribution. The formula is as follows:

Qc=(Xc/(100-Xc)+(0.75*Xo2)/100)*Qw

Qc­-the carbon black mass;

Xc-the carbon mass ratio;

Xo2-the Oxygen content;

Qw-the tungsten powder mass.

Because of uneven composition or inaccurate condition controlling, carbon mass ratio of tungsten carbide powder often deviate from 6.12%; therefore the extra carbon amount or tungsten powder should be added. The formula is as follows:
Qe=Q((100-Qa)/(100-Qt))

Qe­-the extra carbon black mass needs;

Qa-the Practical carbon black mass;

Q-the WC powder mass;

Qt-the total carbon black mass needs.
