Tungsten carbide represents a massive step on for the mining industry. The need and benefit of using tungsten carbide tools in the mining industry is very apparent when you consider what was used before tungsten carbide was brought to the force. The majority of work in a mine was initially undertaken with a pick axe and a shovel. This was eventually replaced by steel tools, which represented a massive step on for the industry. Steel tools ensured that there was a move away from being wholly reliant on man power but the problem with steel was that it would be very prone to wearing away. This would halt work down the minutes, ensuring that even minor projects would take a considerable amount of time.

 

There have even been moves by mining firms to find tools that represent even more benefits than what tungsten carbide tools can provide. This led to the emergence of various cemented carbide tools, which contains tungsten carbide, tantalum carbide, titanium carbide and cobalt. This created a material that is even tougher than the standard tungsten carbide tool while enhancing the reliability of its heat resistance.
