Tungsten resin, also known as resin tungsten alloy, tungsten-filled polymer, or tungsten polymer, is a product formed by mixing various resins (such as nitrile rubber, chlorinated polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, etc.) with transition metal tungsten powder through special metallurgical techniques. It is a gray-black solid material under normal temperature and pressure, featuring non-toxic, environmentally friendly, non-radioactive, high specific gravity, good plasticity, excellent hydrophobicity, strong radiation resistance, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance. As a result, it is widely used in aerospace, aviation, maritime, automotive, medical, and nuclear industry fields.
Specifically, the main applications of tungsten resin are as follows: first, as a radiation shielding material; second, for manufacturing fishing weights and toy counterweights.
In terms of radiation shielding materials, tungsten polymer can be used to produce protective clothing, gloves, hats, and face shields, as well as medical or nuclear industry shielding components. Compared to lead materials, tungsten resin offers higher density, better heat resistance, and greater environmental friendliness, aligning with the development requirements of the new materials era. Notably, under the same thickness, tungsten resin provides superior shielding performance compared to lead materials.
A protective suit made with tungsten resin and an antistatic fabric interlayer has upper and lower panels and sleeves containing tungsten resin material, with the tungsten resin sandwiched between two layers of antistatic fabric. This protective suit not only offers strong radiation resistance and antistatic capabilities but also provides good hand feel and high comfort.
Medical tungsten resin shielding components are widely used in medical imaging, radiotherapy systems, nuclear medicine, and security systems, effectively blocking X-rays, gamma rays, and other types of radiation to protect staff and patients from harm.
In terms of counterweight applications, besides its high specific gravity and small volume, tungsten resin’s good plasticity and water resistance make it suitable for fishing weights in fishing gear and various toy counterweights. In water, tungsten resin fishing weights exhibit strong stability and are less likely to be detected by fish.
