WO3 hollow-sphere, as a typical n-type semiconductor, has good sensitivity to alcohol, acetone, CS2, and other organic gases, so it is regarded as the most important sensing material for fabricating highly sensitive gas sensor. Some experts have prepared WO3 hollow spheres in solution phase by the controlled hydrolysis of WCl6 using novel carbon microspheres as the templates.

The experts characterize all of the products by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the as-synthesized WO3 hollow spheres had large diameters of about 400 nm and thin shells of about 30 nm composed of numerous small nanocrystals. Prompted by the porous structure and small crystal size of the shell wall, they constructed WO3 hollow-sphere highly sensitive gas sensors and found that these sensors had good sensitivity to alcohol, acetone, CS2, and other organic gases.
