Tungsten Disulfide Coating Thickness Measured by Magnetic Thickness Gauge (I)

As tungsten disulfide has diamagnetism, its coating thickness can be successfully measured by magnetic stretching thickness gauge. And magnetic stretching thickness gauge is a main kind of magnetic thickness gauge.

Magnetic thickness gauge is usually used to measure the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on iron substrates. It is a nondestructive measurement method, widely used in the measurement of coatings on steel and iron. According to the operation principle, magnetic thickness gauge includes two types: magnetic stretching thickness gauge and magnetic/electromagnetic induction thickness gauge.

The coating thickness of tungsten disulfide can be successfully measured by magnetic stretching thickness gauge, which is simple and safe.

The magnetic stretching thickness gauge consists of a magnet, a calibration spring and a scale. The attraction between the magnet and the magnetic steel matrix will pull the two together. As the coating thickness between the two separates increases, the magnet becomes easier to pull out.

Therefore, the thickness of tungsten disulfide coating is mainly measured by the drawing force. Thinner coatings generally have greater magnetic attraction, while thicker coatings have relatively smaller magnetic attraction. Usually, the magnetic stretching thickness gauge is very sensitive to the measurement of surface roughness, curvature, substrate thickness and composition of metal alloys.

The magnetic stretching thickness gauge is durable, simple, cheap and portable. Moreover, it usually does not require calibration and adjustment. As only a small number of readings are needed in the production process, it is a good low-cost solution to use the magnetic stretching thickness gauge for measurement of the coating thickness. The instrument is usually of pencil or rollback dial type. The pencil type uses a magnet mounted on a coil spring. These measuring instruments can be used safely in explosive environment. Paint contractors often use them in powder coating operation, and the measurement deviation is about (+5%).
