Tungsten Disulfide Powder Used in Parts Polishing

Tungsten disulfide powder has metallic luster and good lubricity. Therefore, it can be used in parts polishing to improve the smoothness and brightness of parts surfaces. Usually, tungsten disulfide powder is mixed with isopropanol in the polishing process.

Isopropanol, which is also known as IPA in the industry, is a colourless transparent liquid. It is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform and many other organic solvents. Isopropanol is an important chemical product and raw material that mainly used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints and so on.

Polishing reduces the roughness of parts surfaces by mechanical, chemical or electrochemical action. It uses polishing tools, abrasive particles or other polishing media to modify the surfaces of the parts, aiming at improving the smoothness and brightness of them. Polishing wheel, which is often made of multi-layer canvas, felt or leather, is a frequently-used polishing tool. It is clamped by metal circular plates on both sides and its rims are coated with polishing agents uniformly.

Tungsten disulfide is usually mixed with isopropanol in parts polishing. It involves the following steps:

Step One: Clean the parts and degrease them.

Step Two: Tungsten disulfide powder is mixed with isopropanol (also known as industrial alcohol) to form paste. Then paste is coated on the parts and the cotton polishing wheels, waiting for drying.

Step Three: When the solder paste is dried, the polishing wheels are used to polish the parts.

Step Four: The parts are polished and honed continuously until silver-gray coating is seen.

Polishing of the parts is slow and laborious. During the polishing process, speed and friction determine the binding efficiency of tungsten disulfide powder and parts. The greater the speed and pressure, the greater the bonding. And electric tools such as polishing wheels, Dremel tools and grindstones are essential in the process as well.
