How to Add Tungsten Disulfide to Lithium Base Grease?

A new kind of grease with good lubricating performance is formed by adding tungsten disulfide to lithium base grease, which is a simple and time-saving preparation method.

Lithium base grease is made from natural lithium fatty acid soap that thickens medium viscosity mineral lubricating oil or synthetic lubricating oil. There are three types of lithium base grease (GB7324-1994) according to its consistence: 1#, 2# and 3#. The lithium grease has good water resistance, mechanical stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation stability, which make it an ideal material for the lubrication of mechanical equipment at the working temperature of -20°C~120°C.

Tungsten disulfide can be used as the additive to grease with its good lubricating performance. A new kind of grease can be prepared by adding tungsten disulfide to the lithium base grease so as to have a better lubricating performance.

The preparation process of the new grease is as follows:

1. Tungsten disulfide powder, MVI500 base oil and lithium soap of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid are prepared for the preparation.

2. The base oil with a mass of 2/3 and the lithium soap of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid with a mass fraction of 9% are mixed, stirred and heated in the reactor.When the temperature reached 170°C, the mixture is continuously stirred for 5minutes.

3. The above mixture is continuously heated to 205°C and become liquid. Expand the liquid under the high temperature for 5 minutes.

4. The liquid is quenched rapidly with the remaining 1/3 mass of base oil. It is stirred for minutes at the temperature of 170°C.

5. Tungsten disulfide is added to the above material and stirred evenly in it at the temperature of 130°C. When the material is cooled to room temperature, it is melted into fat on the triple-roller mill.

6. The new grease is successfully prepared.

This preparation method is simple and time-consuming. In addition, with its good friction performance, the new grease prepared can be widely used in the lubrication treatment of mechanical equipment so as to reduce the friction loss.
