The Harm of Tungsten Disulfide

The harm of tungsten disulfide to human body mainly comes from the tungsten disulfide powder produced in the process of crushing and grinding. It may cause harm to human body through inhalation, intake and skin or eye contact, causing lung damage, eye and skin irritation and other conditions.

Tungsten disulfide’s molecular formula is WS2 and its molecular weight is 247.97. Its CAS no. is 12138-09-9 and EINECS no. is 235-243-3. With an appearance of gray black powder, tungsten disulfide is a kind of inert material and is non-toxic. Tungsten disulfide is a compound of tungsten and sulfur that is insoluble in water and organic solvents and does not react with acids and bases.

Tungsten disulfide may cause harm to human body through inhalation, ingestion and skin or eye contact (for dusts, mists, powder and fumes). The harm of it is related chiefly to the dust arising out of the crushing and milling operations. Inhalation of tungsten disulfide may cause transient or permanent lung damage. In addition, inhalation may cause irritation of the nose and throat, resulting in the discomforts. Anything else, tungsten disulfide may cause skin and eye irritation typically due to the abrasive nature of the powder. However, these effects are generally only found when there is concurrent exposure to other dust(s).

If the dangerous behavior related to tungsten disulfide is inadvertently caused, we can take the following measures for first aid:

  1. First aid for eyes:If irritation occurs, flush with a large amount of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
  2. First aid for skin: Wash with soap and water. If irritation or rash occurs, isolate from exposure. If rash persists, seek medical attention.
  3. First aid for Inhalation: If large amount of dust are inhaled, move the exposed person to fresh air. If necessary, perform artificial respiration and seek medical attention.
  4. First aid for Ingestion: If ingested, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make unconscious person vomit.

In general, tungsten disulfide does not pose an important health hazard to human body, and its damage is mainly related to dust produced by crushing and milling. If you are exposed to a dangerous situation and meet with inhalation, ingestion or contact with skin and eyes, you should take necessary first aid measures.
