Rare Earth Modified Tungsten-based Ultra-thin Diamond Saw Blade

Ultra-thin diamond saw blade refers to the diamond saw blade with a thickness of less than 1.0 mm and high precision. Its cutting tool slot is narrow, which is beneficial to saving valuable materials in the cutting process. It is widely used in cutting silicon, silicon carbide and other photoelectric materials.

Commonly used ultra-thin diamond saw blades include iron-based and cobalt-based ultra-thin diamond saw blades. Iron-based ultra-thin diamond saw blade has high mechanical properties, good wettability to diamond, and low cost, but its self-sharpening is not good; while cobalt-based ultra-thin diamond saw blade has good formability and sinterability, good wettability to diamond, strong bonding force, good toughness and self-sharpening, it is the most widely used metal bonding agent in the field of diamond tools.

Some researchers believe that using pure tungsten-based binders, rare earths may be helpful. The melting point of tungsten can be effectively reduced by using rare earth materials, thus realizing the manufacture of tungsten-based bonded diamond ultra-thin saw blades. The scheme of rare earth modified tungsten-based diamond ultra-thin saw blades includes:

1)Preparing rare earth modified tungsten-based binder: According to the total quality of the rare earth modified tungsten-based binder, it contains the following components: tungsten 40%, nickel 5%, iron 4%, tin 30%, copper 20%, manganese 0.5%, lanthanum oxide 0.5%. After the above components are fully mixed, they can be grinded uniformly by high-energy ball milling; the artificial single crystal diamond powder with fine W40 is modified by 100% of the diamond concentration. Tungsten-based binder is fully mixed.

2)According to the different geometrical shapes of the ultra-thin diamond saw blades, the mixture was cold-pressed and sintered by vacuum hot pressing with the corresponding die. The sintering temperature was 950 ℃, the sintering pressure was 100KN, and the sintering time was 30 minutes.

3) After vacuum hot pressing sintering, the rough diamond saw blades were obtained by hot isostatic pressing sintering, sintering temperature 850 ℃, sintering pressure 90 MPa and sintering time 7 minutes.

3)The rough products of ultra-thin diamond saw blade were dressed with diamond roller and oil stone, and the finished products of ultra-thin diamond saw blade were obtained. The density of the ultra-thin diamond saw blade was measured by water weight method, and the hardness of the ultra-thin diamond saw blade was tested by Rockwell hardness tester. The density and hardness of the ultra-thin diamond saw blade were 97% and HRC64.2.

Rare earth modified tungsten-based binder, each component complements each other, reduces sintering temperature from nearly 3400 degrees Celsius to the acceptable range of diamond, solves the shortcomings of tungsten-based binder which is difficult to be applied in practice because of high sintering temperature, and successfully realizes the manufacture of tungsten-based binder diamond ultra-thin saw blade.
